Thane is a city built between a national park and a creek. The Yeoor hills, part of Sanjay Gandhi National Park, rise behind Upvan and the western wards. The creek and its mangroves run along the east, where flamingos gather each winter. In between, the city's lakes (Masunda, Upvan, Kachrali and others) hold most of its public green. New towers along Ghodbunder Road have filled much of the land between these edges. Green work here means planting, protecting and maintaining in the space that remains: for the people who live in it.
Tree work in Thane runs through the TMC Tree Authority under the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975. Redevelopment in the older wards, road widening and metro work along Ghodbunder Road, and new towers in Kolshet and Majiwada all meet mature rain trees, gulmohars and native species. We number and measure every tree, prepare the application, and assess honestly which trees can be moved. Transplanted trees are watered and checked until the authority's survival condition is met. The work is carried from our base in the region by named people, start to finish, not passed down a chain.

Local demand
What drives tree management in Thane.
Construction is the first driver. Every tower, road widening and metro alignment on Ghodbunder Road, in Majiwada or Kolshet meets trees that cannot be removed without the TMC Tree Authority's permission under the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975. That permission brings enumeration, compensatory planting and, where a tree can be moved, transplantation with survival checks. Clearance conditions add green-cover requirements on the plot itself. Developers therefore need green work that satisfies the authority on paper and survives on the ground: through a Konkan monsoon and the dry months that follow.
Much of Thane's older building stock is reaching the end of its life, and each monsoon TMC lists buildings it considers dangerous. Their redevelopment brings plots holding trees planted decades ago into the Tree Authority process. The 2021 amendments to the Trees Act added a heritage-tree category for trees fifty years and older, with heavier compensatory planting where one is removed, which makes an accurate age and girth record matter more. Road widening and metro works add public-land trees to the same queue, and residents watch these applications closely.
How it works
Tree Management, from survey to survival.
- 01/05
Tree enumeration & census
Every tree on site numbered, measured and identified, the defensible count the whole application rests on.
- 02/05
Transplant feasibility
An honest assessment of which trees can be saved by transplantation rather than felled.
- 03/05
Tree Authority NOC
The cutting / transplantation application prepared and pursued through the relevant municipal Tree Authority.
- 04/05
Transplantation
Careful lifting, moving and replanting of feasible trees with root-ball protection.
- 05/05
Post-transplant survival
Monitoring and the survival compliance the authority requires after a transplant.

Straight answers
Tree Management in Thane: common questions.
01Our old Naupada building is going for redevelopment and has two large trees in the compound. What happens to them?
First they are measured, identified and aged, because a tree around fifty years old may count as a heritage tree. The architect can often shift the footprint or the ramp to keep one. Where that is not possible, we assess whether transplanting will work, apply to the TMC Tree Authority, and carry out the compensatory planting it sets.
02Can we cut or shift a tree on our Thane site?
Not on your own authority. Under the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975, the TMC Tree Authority decides, usually with conditions on compensatory planting. We enumerate every tree on the plot, prepare the application, and where a tree can be moved we plan the transplant and monitor its survival afterwards.
03How long does tree management take in Thane, and who is involved?
TMC Tree Authority · TMC Garden Department · Maharashtra Forest Department · MPCB Thane are the bodies a Thane project works with. On timing: census in weeks; NOC by Tree Authority calendar. KIPL sets out a realistic Thane schedule once the site and the scope have been read, and carries the work through to the outcome, with comparable work on the record such as GREEN ZONE & TREE MANAGEMENT, THANE.
