Majiwada's older trees stand in the village lanes and in the compounds of low buildings about to be redeveloped: often large peepal, banyan, mango and coconut trees that have outlived the houses around them. A redevelopment plan drawn to the plot edge leaves no room for them. We survey early enough to change the plan: shift a ramp, hold a setback, keep a tree inside the open space. Where removal cannot be avoided, we prepare the Tree Authority application with an honest record of each tree.
Majiwada sits at the junction where the Eastern Express Highway meets the start of Ghodbunder Road, with flyovers and the Metro Line 4 viaduct overhead. The old village of Majiwada survives in lanes of low houses, now enclosed by towers of twenty floors and more. Around it are commercial blocks, hotels and offices, much of it built on land that was once industrial or open. Traffic between Mumbai, Ghodbunder Road and the highways north passes through the junction day and night. The neighbourhood is largely built out: the change now is redevelopment and densification rather than new ground.
How it works
Tree Management, from survey to survival.
- 01/05
Tree enumeration & census
Every tree on site numbered, measured and identified, the defensible count the whole application rests on.
- 02/05
Transplant feasibility
An honest assessment of which trees can be saved by transplantation rather than felled.
- 03/05
Tree Authority NOC
The cutting / transplantation application prepared and pursued through the relevant municipal Tree Authority.
- 04/05
Transplantation
Careful lifting, moving and replanting of feasible trees with root-ball protection.
- 05/05
Post-transplant survival
Monitoring and the survival compliance the authority requires after a transplant.

Tree Management in Majiwada: common questions.
01A large banyan stands on the boundary between our plot and the lane. Who decides what happens to it?
The Tree Authority, whoever owns the ground. A boundary tree needs the same application as any other, and if it stands on public land the corporation is also its owner. Banyans rarely survive being moved at that size, so keeping it usually means designing around its canopy and roots. We map it early so the architect can.
02How long does tree management take in Majiwada?
On timing: census in weeks; NOC by Tree Authority calendar. A realistic Majiwada schedule is set once the site and the scope have been read, and the work is carried through to the outcome by the same named people.
