Tree Management in Mumbai, on the ground where the work actually is, the city's reserved open spaces, its society and roadside trees and the green edge along Aarey and the creeks, with one team on it from the site survey until the survival data says it took.

Mumbai has little open ground and a great deal of weather. Green space here is carved from reserved plots, road medians, society compounds, podium decks and the margins of Aarey and Sanjay Gandhi National Park, and it has to survive four months of heavy monsoon followed by a long dry season. Salt wind reaches the western shoreline; reclaimed land in the island city carries fill rather than soil. No tree on a development site can be felled or moved without the Tree Authority's permission. Planting here is less about space than about what will survive.

Almost every redevelopment in Mumbai starts with a tree question. An old society compound in Chembur or Vile Parle may hold mature mango, coconut and rain trees in the way of a new footprint, and none can be felled or moved without the MCGM Tree Authority. The application rests on a numbered census, and felling proposals are opened to public objections. The 2021 amendment treats trees over fifty years old as heritage trees, with heavier compensatory planting. Transplant survival is watched closely here: as it should be. The work is carried from our base in the region by named people, start to finish, not passed down a chain.

Every corporation, its own rules. One credible census argues them all.

Local demand

What drives tree management in Mumbai.

The second driver is private. Redevelopment clears old compounds whose trees need a Tree Authority decision and compensatory planting, and Environment Clearances for larger projects carry plantation conditions of their own. Corporate campuses in Powai, Goregaon and Vikhroli, hotels and hospitals want landscapes that look finished in May and survive July. Residents want shade: summer heat in the dense wards falls hardest on people who walk, wait at bus stops and work outdoors. That is the stake beneath all of it: a street, a school yard or a society compound that is cooler because something was planted and kept.

Every monsoon, trees come down across Mumbai: on cars, on footpaths, sometimes on people. MCGM prunes roadside trees before the rains and serves notices on housing societies and private owners to deal with dangerous trees on their own land, where a fall is the owner's responsibility. That creates steady demand for surveys that judge a tree's health and risk, not only count it. Alongside runs the infrastructure pipeline (metro lines, road widening and the coastal road) where large numbers of trees need assessment, transplanting or compensatory planting at once.

Straight answers

Tree Management in Mumbai: common questions.

01A tree in our society compound is leaning toward the building. Who decides what happens to it?

MCGM's Tree Authority, through the ward's garden department. Apply with photographs and a note on the tree's condition; the tree officer inspects and may allow pruning, removal of the dangerous limb or, if the tree is dead or unsafe, felling. In a monsoon emergency, call the MCGM disaster control room. An arborist's survey strengthens the application.

02Can our housing society in Mumbai cut a tree in its compound?

Not without permission. Under the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975, felling or transplanting a tree needs the approval of MCGM's Tree Authority, applied for through the Garden Department. Pruning of dangerous branches before the monsoon has its own route. Unpermitted felling attracts penalties, and compensatory planting is usually a condition of any approval.

03How long does tree management take in Mumbai, and who is involved?

MCGM Garden Department and Tree Authority · Maharashtra Forest Department (Mangrove Cell) · SEIAA Maharashtra · Maharashtra State Biodiversity Board are the bodies a Mumbai project works with. On timing: census in weeks; NOC by Tree Authority calendar. KIPL sets out a realistic Mumbai schedule once the site and the scope have been read, and carries the work through to the outcome, with comparable work on the record such as MIYAWAKI PLANTATION CONSULTANCY, MMRCL.
