In Kalwa's crowded lanes, a large tree stands within reach of roofs, wires and people. The pressing question is often not removal for a building but safety before the monsoon: which trees are hollow, root-damaged, leaning or carrying dead limbs. A tree risk survey identifies them, recommends pruning, bracing or, where unavoidable, removal, and supports the application to the Tree Authority. The aim is to keep standing every tree that can safely stand.
Kalwa lies across the creek from central Thane, joined to it by the Kalwa bridges and the railway. It is one of TMC's ward committees, and it is densely lived in: older buildings near the station, chawls, and large settlements climbing the lower slopes of the Parsik hills, with newer buildings on flatter ground. The creek edge on its western side is lined with mangroves, and nalas from the hill run down through the settlements into it. Thane-Belapur Road begins at its southern end. Open ground is scarce, and much of what exists is unplanned.
How it works
Tree Management, from survey to survival.
- 01/05
Tree enumeration & census
Every tree on site numbered, measured and identified, the defensible count the whole application rests on.
- 02/05
Transplant feasibility
An honest assessment of which trees can be saved by transplantation rather than felled.
- 03/05
Tree Authority NOC
The cutting / transplantation application prepared and pursued through the relevant municipal Tree Authority.
- 04/05
Transplantation
Careful lifting, moving and replanting of feasible trees with root-ball protection.
- 05/05
Post-transplant survival
Monitoring and the survival compliance the authority requires after a transplant.

Tree Management in Kalwa: common questions.
01A tree next to our building leans towards the roof. Can we cut it ourselves?
No. Even a leaning or damaged tree needs the Tree Authority's permission to be felled, and heavy pruning may need it too. In an emergency, the corporation's disaster cell or Garden Department can act. We can assess the tree, document the risk and prepare the application, so the decision is made quickly and on evidence.
02How long does tree management take in Kalwa?
On timing: census in weeks; NOC by Tree Authority calendar. A realistic Kalwa schedule is set once the site and the scope have been read, and the work is carried through to the outcome by the same named people.
