Plots at the foot of the hills in Kasarvadavali often hold trees that are not garden trees at all: native forest species that seeded in from the park's edge, standing on shallow soil over rock. They transplant poorly, and losing them thins the green margin between the townships and the forest. We identify every tree to species and age, advise the architect which clusters to keep along the hill-side boundary, and plan compensatory planting with native species suited to the same shallow, well-drained ground.
Kasarvadavali lies towards the northern end of Thane's stretch of Ghodbunder Road, below the hills of Sanjay Gandhi National Park and short of the climb to Gaimukh. The village is still there, with its own lanes and houses, but most of the land around it has been built as townships in recent years, and some of the newest layouts reach right up to the foot of the hills. Metro Line 4 was planned with a station here, and the area is changing from the city's far edge into a connected neighbourhood. The forest is a constant presence: from windows, on walks, and sometimes on the roads at night.
How it works
Tree Management, from survey to survival.
- 01/05
Tree enumeration & census
Every tree on site numbered, measured and identified, the defensible count the whole application rests on.
- 02/05
Transplant feasibility
An honest assessment of which trees can be saved by transplantation rather than felled.
- 03/05
Tree Authority NOC
The cutting / transplantation application prepared and pursued through the relevant municipal Tree Authority.
- 04/05
Transplantation
Careful lifting, moving and replanting of feasible trees with root-ball protection.
- 05/05
Post-transplant survival
Monitoring and the survival compliance the authority requires after a transplant.

Tree Management in Kasarvadavali: common questions.
01Some trees on our plot are forest species. Do different rules apply to them?
Within Thane's municipal limits, the Tree Authority's permission covers them like any other tree, though native species can weigh more heavily in its decision and in the compensatory planting it sets. On land recorded as forest, forest law applies instead. We identify each tree and check which regime governs the ground it stands on.
02How long does tree management take in Kasarvadavali?
On timing: census in weeks; NOC by Tree Authority calendar. A realistic Kasarvadavali schedule is set once the site and the scope have been read, and the work is carried through to the outcome by the same named people.
