Ulhasnagar has very little public green, and it shows. The camps began as military barracks and filled in over seventy years until buildings met at the lane. There are few gardens, fewer large trees, and the Waldhuni crosses the city as a narrow, hemmed-in channel. The Ulhas touches its edge near Shahad. Green work here is patient and small in scale (a school ground, a building compound, a strip of riverbank) for families who have nowhere else nearby to find shade.
Tree work in Ulhasnagar runs through the UMC Tree Authority under the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975. The trees in question are few and often old: neem, peepal, banyan and gulmohar in the compounds of buildings now being redeveloped, and along roads being widened. Because the city has so few, each application is watched closely. We number, measure and identify every tree, prepare the application, and assess honestly which ones can be moved and kept alive. The work is carried from our base in the region by named people, start to finish, not passed down a chain.

Local demand
What drives tree management in Ulhasnagar.
Redevelopment is the first driver. As older buildings in the camps come down, their compounds, often holding the only mature trees on the street, go through the UMC Tree Authority under the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975. That brings enumeration, compensatory planting and, where the plot allows, transplanting. On plots this small, compensatory planting rarely fits on site, so it has to be placed and kept alive somewhere else. The new towers carry green requirements of their own, which podiums, terraces and setbacks have to meet.
Ulhasnagar's redevelopment wave is recent and fast, and many of the buildings coming down had trees planted in front of them by the families who first moved in. Some of those trees are now fifty years old or more, which can bring them into the heritage category. Road widening to ease congestion in the camps adds roadside trees to the queue. With so few mature trees in the city, residents watch each case, and an application with an accurate census and a sound transplant plan is more likely to be settled without dispute.
How it works
Tree Management, from survey to survival.
- 01/05
Tree enumeration & census
Every tree on site numbered, measured and identified, the defensible count the whole application rests on.
- 02/05
Transplant feasibility
An honest assessment of which trees can be saved by transplantation rather than felled.
- 03/05
Tree Authority NOC
The cutting / transplantation application prepared and pursued through the relevant municipal Tree Authority.
- 04/05
Transplantation
Careful lifting, moving and replanting of feasible trees with root-ball protection.

Straight answers
Tree Management in Ulhasnagar: common questions.
01The Tree Authority has asked for compensatory planting, but our plot has no room. What now?
Ask whether it will accept planting on another site. Authorities often allow compensatory trees on public land or another plot, sometimes against a deposit held until survival is shown. We find a suitable site, agree it with the UMC Tree Authority, plant and maintain the trees, and report survival until the condition is closed.
02Our building compound in the camps has one old neem tree. Can the redevelopment keep it?
Often, if it is planned for early. A single tree at the edge of a plot can sometimes be kept by moving the ramp, the parking entry or a staircase, and it gives the new building shade that took decades to grow. Where it truly cannot stay, we assess transplanting and apply to the UMC Tree Authority.
03How long does tree management take in Ulhasnagar, and who is involved?
UMC Tree Authority · UMC · Maharashtra Forest Department · MPCB Kalyan are the bodies an Ulhasnagar project works with. On timing: census in weeks; NOC by Tree Authority calendar. KIPL sets out a realistic Ulhasnagar schedule once the site and the scope have been read, and carries the work through to the outcome, with comparable work on the record such as MCGM GARDEN DEVELOPMENT- MIYAWAKI PLANTATION.
