What it is

Forest Clearance, without the guesswork.

When a project needs to use forest land, that land must be legally diverted under the Forest (Conservation) Act 1980, recently renamed and amended by the Van (Sanrakshan Evam Samvardhan) Adhiniyam 2023. The approval runs in two stages and carries obligations that outlast the grant: compensatory afforestation and the payment of Net Present Value.

KIPL prepares the diversion proposal from Stage-I in-principle approval through Stage-II final approval, with the compensatory afforestation scheme and the NPV assessment the case depends on, in the eco-sensitive terrain where a defensible proposal is the difference between a project and a refusal.

What’s included

Every component of forest clearance.

4 components, each a service in its own right: open any one, or bring us the whole scope and one team carries it.

One accountable team, start to finish

The process

How the file moves.

You see the whole route on day one; then one accountable team holds it, stage after stage.

Stage-I proposal

The in-principle diversion proposal, with land records, maps and justification.

Compensatory afforestation

Identification of non-forest or degraded forest land for compensatory planting.

NPV assessment

The Net Present Value of the diverted forest, assessed and provided for.

Stage-II approval

Compliance with Stage-I conditions, leading to formal final approval.

Forest Clearance

Forest land is not simply acquired. It is exchanged: for afforestation, for value, and for a case that holds.

Straight answers

Forest Clearance: the questions clients ask first.

01What are Stage-I and Stage-II forest clearance?

Stage-I is the in-principle approval to divert forest land, granted subject to conditions such as compensatory afforestation and NPV. Stage-II is the final approval, granted once those Stage-I conditions are complied with. Diversion is only complete at Stage-II.

02What is compensatory afforestation?

A core condition of forest diversion: the project must fund afforestation over an equivalent (or larger) area of non-forest or degraded forest land, to offset the forest cover lost. Identifying suitable land and costing the scheme is part of the proposal.

03What is Net Present Value (NPV) in forest clearance?

NPV is a payment representing the economic value of the ecological services the diverted forest would have provided over time. It is assessed by land category and paid as a condition of diversion, alongside compensatory afforestation.

04Did the 2023 amendment change forest clearance?

Yes. The Van (Sanrakshan Evam Samvardhan) Adhiniyam 2023 renamed and amended the Forest (Conservation) Act 1980, adjusting scope and exemptions. Proposals are prepared to the current, amended framework.
