Tree Management in Vasai-Virar, on the ground where the work actually is, the Tungareshwar forest, the coconut and banana wadis of the western villages and the creek and salt-pan edges, with one team on it from the site survey until the survival data says it took.
Why Vasai-Virar
The local ground tree management sits on.

Vasai-Virar still holds a great deal of green, though it is changing fast. To the east, the Tungareshwar hills are a wildlife sanctuary. To the west, villages such as Papdy, Nirmal and Bolinj keep their coconut and banana wadis and old wells. Along the creek run mangroves and salt pans. Between them, Nalasopara, Virar and Naigaon have filled with housing that has little shade of its own. Green work here means protecting what remains and planting where the new city left none: for the families now living in it.
Tree work in Vasai-Virar passes through the VVCMC Tree Authority under the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975. It meets two kinds of ground: layouts in Nalasopara, Virar and Naigaon carved from farms and salt pans, where scattered old trees stand on the building line, and the settled villages of Vasai West, where trees are part of every compound. We enumerate and measure each tree, prepare the application, judge honestly which can move, and care for moved trees until the survival condition is met. The work is carried from our base in the region by named people, start to finish, not passed down a chain.

Local demand
What drives tree management in Vasai-Virar.
Housing is the first driver. New layouts in Nalasopara, Virar, Naigaon and Vasai East meet trees (mango, jackfruit, tamarind, old banyans on former farmland) that cannot be removed without the VVCMC Tree Authority's permission under the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975. That permission brings enumeration, compensatory planting and, where a tree can move, transplantation. Larger layouts carry green-cover conditions in their clearances too. Much of this land is filled ground over clay, so planting that survives needs soil work before the first sapling goes in.
Much of Vasai West is still held as small family wadis. When a family sells a plot or builds a house for the next generation, the mango, jackfruit and coconut trees on it come before the Tree Authority like any other trees, and some owners learn this only when a neighbour complains or work is stopped. Many of these trees are older than the houses around them. A census and an application prepared before design lets a family keep the best trees and build around them.
How it works
Tree Management, from survey to survival.
- 01/05
Tree enumeration & census
Every tree on site numbered, measured and identified, the defensible count the whole application rests on.
- 02/05
Transplant feasibility
An honest assessment of which trees can be saved by transplantation rather than felled.
- 03/05
Tree Authority NOC
The cutting / transplantation application prepared and pursued through the relevant municipal Tree Authority.
- 04/05
Transplantation
Careful lifting, moving and replanting of feasible trees with root-ball protection.
- 05/05
Post-transplant survival
Monitoring and the survival compliance the authority requires after a transplant.

Straight answers
Tree Management in Vasai-Virar: common questions.
01A tree in our Vasai society is leaning towards the building after the monsoon. Can we cut it ourselves?
No. Even a dangerous tree needs the Tree Authority's permission. Report it to VVCMC with photographs, especially if it threatens people or property, so the corporation can act. Often pruning or crown reduction makes it safe without felling. We inspect the tree, advise whether it can be kept, check what permission the work needs, and prepare the request.
02Do the fruit trees on our Vasai plot need Tree Authority permission?
Yes. Within VVCMC limits the Trees Act covers mango, jackfruit and other fruit trees as much as any other, and felling without permission carries penalties. We number and measure every tree, prepare the application, and assess which can be transplanted. Old mango trees are often worth designing around: they give more shade than anything planted to replace them.
03How long does tree management take in Vasai-Virar, and who is involved?
VVCMC Tree Authority · VVCMC Garden Department · Maharashtra Forest Department · Mangrove Cell are the bodies a Vasai-Virar project works with. On timing: census in weeks; NOC by Tree Authority calendar. KIPL sets out a realistic Vasai-Virar schedule once the site and the scope have been read, and carries the work through to the outcome, with comparable work on the record such as MCGM GARDEN DEVELOPMENT- MIYAWAKI PLANTATION.
