Powai's hill slopes and older township streets carry large trees, and each new building, road or utility line touches some of them. Every felling or transplant needs the MCGM Tree Authority's permission, and slopes add a second concern: removing roots can loosen soil before the monsoon. We list and inspect every trunk on the site, identify those that hold the slope, and plan retention, transplanting and replanting so the application protects the ground as well as the tree count.
Powai grew around its lake, created in the late nineteenth century by damming a stream for the city's water, though it was later dropped from the drinking supply. IIT Bombay occupies a large campus on its shore, and from the late 1980s the planned township of Hiranandani Gardens rose beside it, with towers, offices, schools and hospitals. The forested hills of the national park rise to the north, with Vihar Lake beyond. Mugger crocodiles still live in Powai Lake. Newer towers keep filling the gaps between the township and the hutments climbing the slopes.
How it works
Tree Management, from survey to survival.
- 01/05
Tree enumeration & census
Every tree on site numbered, measured and identified, the defensible count the whole application rests on.
- 02/05
Transplant feasibility
An honest assessment of which trees can be saved by transplantation rather than felled.
- 03/05
Tree Authority NOC
The cutting / transplantation application prepared and pursued through the relevant municipal Tree Authority.
- 04/05
Transplantation
Careful lifting, moving and replanting of feasible trees with root-ball protection.
- 05/05

Tree Management in Powai: common questions.
01Can a housing society prune trees in its compound without permission?
Routine pruning that does not harm the tree is generally allowed, but heavy lopping or felling needs MCGM's sanction. The line between the two is not always obvious. We assess the trees, advise on what is permitted, and apply for permission where the work goes beyond ordinary pruning.
02How long does tree management take in Powai?
On timing: census in weeks; NOC by Tree Authority calendar. A realistic Powai schedule is set once the site and the scope have been read, and the work is carried through to the outcome by the same named people.
