Mumbai is where a great deal of India's environmental reporting is signed. The head offices of listed companies, banks and funds sit in Nariman Point, Lower Parel and the Bandra-Kurla Complex, and their BRSR disclosures, EPR returns and lender audits are prepared here even when the plants are elsewhere. The city also keeps working industry of its own (the Trombay and Mahul refinery belt, the Andheri and Marol MIDC estates, SEEPZ) and a construction pipeline that carries clearance conditions for years. Advisory work here moves between the boardroom and the site.

A large share of the listed companies BRSR covers are headquartered in Mumbai, so a great deal of the reporting is written here. The harder work now sits one level down, the mid-sized suppliers and contractors being asked by those companies for Scope 1 and 2 emissions, water and waste figures they have never collected. A materiality assessment, a clean data trail and a carbon footprint built on the right emission factors are what turn a customer questionnaire into an answer a sustainability team can stand behind. The work is carried from our base in the region by named people, start to finish, not passed down a chain.

ESG Advisory & Reporting · Mumbai

The disclosure mandate starts at the top of the pyramid. The data demand runs all the way down it.

Local demand

What drives esg advisory & reporting in Mumbai.

The first driver is disclosure. SEBI's Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report applies to the largest listed companies by market capitalisation, and a large share of them are headquartered in Mumbai. Their questions now travel down the chain to suppliers, contractors and landlords: a mid-sized manufacturer asked for emissions data by a listed customer, a developer asked for water and waste figures by an office tenant. Banks, insurers and funds based in the city add their own layer, asking for environmental and ESG due diligence before they lend or invest. The work lands with finance and sustainability teams who need numbers that hold up under assurance, not a narrative.

Two pressures meet in Mumbai. SEBI's BRSR Core asks the largest listed companies for a set of key indicators that must be independently assured or assessed, which brings sustainability data before the audit committees that sit here. And the Indian arms of multinational groups, many with offices in Powai, Andheri and BKC, are asked by their parents for data that feeds global targets and CDP responses. Exporters of steel, aluminium and other covered goods face the EU's carbon border mechanism. Each asks for the same thing: emissions data that someone can verify.

Straight answers

ESG Advisory & Reporting in Mumbai: common questions.

01Which emission factor should a Mumbai office use for its Scope 2 electricity figure?

For location-based reporting, most Indian companies use the Central Electricity Authority's grid emission factor from its CO2 baseline database. Offices supplied by Tata Power, Adani Electricity or BEST may also report a market-based figure using their supplier's mix or renewable purchases. BRSR compares years, so we fix the method once and document it.

02Our listed customer in Mumbai is asking for ESG data. Are we obliged to give it?

Not by SEBI directly, BRSR is an obligation on listed companies. But those companies are increasingly expected to understand their value chain, so the request usually arrives as a customer condition. We help you set up energy, water, waste and emissions data once, in a form that answers BRSR-style questions and holds up when your customer's report is assured.

03How long does esg advisory & reporting take in Mumbai, and who is involved?

MPCB · SEBI (BRSR) · CPCB (EPR) · MCGM are the bodies a Mumbai project works with. On timing: reporting-cycle driven; strategy ongoing. KIPL sets out a realistic Mumbai schedule once the site and the scope have been read, and carries the work through to the outcome, with comparable work on the record such as Environmental compliance management for a hyperscale data centre.
