Thane is a city built between a national park and a creek. The Yeoor hills, part of Sanjay Gandhi National Park, rise behind Upvan and the western wards. The creek and its mangroves run along the east, where flamingos gather each winter. In between, the city's lakes (Masunda, Upvan, Kachrali and others) hold most of its public green. New towers along Ghodbunder Road have filled much of the land between these edges. Green work here means planting, protecting and maintaining in the space that remains: for the people who live in it.
Landscapes on Thane's podiums and township grounds face two seasons that pull against each other: heavy monsoon rain that waterlogs shallow beds, and dry months when irrigation carries the load. We design drainage into the softscape, favour native and climate-suited planting over thirsty lawns, and size the irrigation to recycled or harvested water where the building has it. Hardscape is laid to shed water rather than pond it. The result is a landscape the society can afford to maintain after handover. The work is carried from our base in the region by named people, start to finish, not passed down a chain.

Local demand
What drives sustainable landscaping in Thane.
The second driver is what residents and employers now expect. Townships sell on their gardens, and societies inherit them once the developer leaves. Campuses and offices in Wagle Estate and along Ghodbunder Road want planting that tolerates dust and heat and stays alive without constant replacement. Around the lakes, the creek and the older wards, municipal and CSR programmes look for green space that holds native species and gives shade to streets that have lost it. In each case the demand is for green that someone will still be looking after in five years.
Most new Thane buildings put their gardens on a podium above parking, where soil is shallow, drainage runs through a slab and every litre of water is pumped. Summer water cuts are familiar in the city, and societies that inherit a thirsty landscape feel them first. Large projects usually carry clearance conditions to reuse treated water from their own STPs, and the landscape is where that water goes. Landscapes that suit these constraints cost less to run, and residents see the difference in their maintenance bills.

Straight answers
Sustainable Landscaping in Thane: common questions.
01Water is leaking from our podium garden into the parking below. Is it the planting?
Sometimes, but more often it is the layers beneath: damaged waterproofing, a blocked drainage mat, missing root barriers, or irrigation running longer than the soil can hold. We check the build-up at a few points, read the irrigation schedule and look at which trees sit over the leaks. The answer is usually a repair and a lighter watering plan, not removing the garden.
02Will a Miyawaki forest survive Thane's heavy monsoon and dry season?
It can, if the soil is prepared and the first years are managed. Monsoon rain helps establishment, but waterlogging and the long dry months before June are where young plantations fail. We improve drainage and soil structure before planting, water through the first dry seasons, and record survival so losses are replaced early.
03How long does sustainable landscaping take in Thane, and who is involved?
TMC Tree Authority · TMC Garden Department · Maharashtra Forest Department · MPCB Thane are the bodies a Thane project works with. On timing: design to execution by scope; maintenance optional. KIPL sets out a realistic Thane schedule once the site and the scope have been read, and carries the work through to the outcome, with comparable work on the record such as GREEN ZONE & TREE MANAGEMENT, THANE.
