Sustainable Landscaping consultants in Mumbai.
Sustainable Landscaping in Mumbai, on the ground where the work actually is, the city's reserved open spaces, its society and roadside trees and the green edge along Aarey and the creeks, with one team on it from the site survey until the survival data says it took.
Why Mumbai
The local ground sustainable landscaping sits on.
- Decided with
- MCGM Garden Department and Tree Authority · Maharashtra Forest Department (Mangrove Cell) · SEIAA Maharashtra · Maharashtra State Biodiversity Board
- Local ground
- The ward gardens and reserved plots of the eastern suburbs, the Aarey–Powai green belt and the creek and mangrove edges
- Typically for
- Corporate campuses, developers, hospitality, institutions
Mumbai has little open ground and a great deal of weather. Green space here is carved from reserved plots, road medians, society compounds, podium decks and the margins of Aarey and Sanjay Gandhi National Park, and it has to survive four months of heavy monsoon followed by a long dry season. Salt wind reaches the western shoreline; reclaimed land in the island city carries fill rather than soil. No tree on a development site can be felled or moved without the Tree Authority's permission. Planting here is less about space than about what will survive.
Mumbai's landscapes are often built on slabs: podium decks, terraces and setback strips with shallow soil. That changes the craft: light growing media, waterproofing that survives roots, drainage sized for a monsoon cloudburst. Water is the other constraint: the city draws on distant lakes, and cuts follow a weak monsoon, so irrigation runs on drip, treated wastewater and harvested rain: the approach behind our drip network across roughly 10,000 m² at TCS Banyan Park. The aim is a landscape that looks like the render in its third summer. The work is carried from our base in the region by named people, start to finish, not passed down a chain.

Local demand
What drives sustainable landscaping in Mumbai.
The second driver is private. Redevelopment clears old compounds whose trees need a Tree Authority decision and compensatory planting, and Environment Clearances for larger projects carry plantation conditions of their own. Corporate campuses in Powai, Goregaon and Vikhroli, hotels and hospitals want landscapes that look finished in May and survive July. Residents want shade: summer heat in the dense wards falls hardest on people who walk, wait at bus stops and work outdoors. That is the stake beneath all of it: a street, a school yard or a society compound that is cooler because something was planted and kept.
Water decides landscape budgets in Mumbai. Buildings that run short in April buy tanker water, and a lawn that needs it daily becomes a monthly cost the society or facility manager feels. At the other end of the year, a hard-paved compound sends monsoon water straight into drains that overflow in heavy rain, the city remembers July 2005. Clients now want landscapes that do both jobs: planting that needs little water in the dry months, and permeable paving, swales and soakage that hold rain on the plot.

Straight answers
Sustainable Landscaping in Mumbai: common questions.
01What should we plant on a sea-facing terrace in Worli or Bandra?
Plants that tolerate salt spray, monsoon wind and full sun, coastal natives and hardy shrubs rather than delicate ornamentals. Planters need anchoring against gusts, and palms or small trees need wind-rated fixings. Salt builds up on leaves and in soil, so periodic washing and leaching help. Confirm the slab's load capacity with the structural engineer before heavy planters go up.
02Which trees stand up to Mumbai's monsoon winds and salt air?
Deep-rooted native species generally fare better than the shallow-rooted or heavily lopped trees that come down each monsoon. Near the sea, salt-tolerant coastal species such as undi and karanj hold up well; inland, jamun, kadamba and bahava are common choices. The right mix depends on the plot's soil, drainage and exposure, so we read the site before choosing.
03How long does sustainable landscaping take in Mumbai, and who is involved?
MCGM Garden Department and Tree Authority · Maharashtra Forest Department (Mangrove Cell) · SEIAA Maharashtra · Maharashtra State Biodiversity Board are the bodies a Mumbai project works with. On timing: design to execution by scope; maintenance optional. KIPL sets out a realistic Mumbai schedule once the site and the scope have been read, and carries the work through to the outcome, with comparable work on the record such as MIYAWAKI PLANTATION CONSULTANCY, MMRCL.
