Kalwa lies across the creek from central Thane, joined to it by the Kalwa bridges and the railway. It is one of TMC's ward committees, and it is densely lived in: older buildings near the station, chawls, and large settlements climbing the lower slopes of the Parsik hills, with newer buildings on flatter ground. The creek edge on its western side is lined with mangroves, and nalas from the hill run down through the settlements into it. Thane-Belapur Road begins at its southern end. Open ground is scarce, and much of what exists is unplanned.
Kalwa's environmental questions are about people living close to hazards. Settlements on the hill slopes face landslides and falling rock in heavy rain. Nalas carry sewage and waste through dense housing into the creek, and the mangroves at the edge take whatever the drains bring. Old buildings in poor condition wait for redevelopment that will change how many people each plot holds. And a ward with so little open ground has few places left for trees, play or shade. Work here is more often public than private.

Straight answers
Kalwa: common questions.
01A protection wall along the creek would stop our lane flooding. What permission would it need?
Coastal clearance at least. If the wall touches mangroves or land notified as forest, Forest Department approval is needed too, and possibly the Bombay High Court's permission, since mangrove matters remain under its watch. The corporation would normally propose such a wall. We can help residents set out the case and the corporation prepare the file.
02Our ward has an empty municipal plot. How could residents get it made into a garden?
Start with the plot's reservation in the development plan. A plot reserved for a garden or playground is far easier to develop as one. Residents can write to the ward office and the Garden Department, and CSR funding can support the work with TMC's consent. We can prepare a simple design and cost to help that conversation along.
03Our housing society in Kalwa segregates, but the collection vehicle mixes everything. Is it still worth it?
Yes, for what the society keeps. Wet waste composted on site never reaches the vehicle, and dry recyclables can go directly to a waste-picker group or recycler. Raise the mixing with the ward office in writing too, the rules require segregated collection. We help societies set up composting and a dry-waste link that does not depend on the vehicle.
04Can the nala running past our building be cleaned up without covering it?
Yes, and covering often makes things worse. A covered nala is harder to clean and hides blockages until they flood. Screening out waste, intercepting sewage in dry weather and desilting before the monsoon do more. Where the banks allow, planting holds the soil. We work with the ward office, which is responsible for the nala.
05Is it safe to put a treatment plant near homes in a dense ward?
It can be, if it is enclosed and properly run. Compact plants today are covered, with odour control on the inlet and closed sludge handling, and many operate beside housing without complaint. Siting still matters: away from windows, with access for sludge removal. We design the enclosure and ventilation for the neighbours as carefully as the process.
