Kalyan-Dombivli's green runs along its water. The Ulhas bends past Kalyan's Durgadi fort and widens into a creek lined with mangroves west of Dombivli, and the Waldhuni joins it at Kalyan. To the north, towards Titwala and the Kalu river, farmland and low hills still hold open ground. Between these edges lie a dense old railway town and a chemical estate with little canopy of its own. Green work here means shade for crowded wards, buffers around industry, and planting that suits the new townships.
Township landscapes in Kalyan-Dombivli are large, and they are handed to societies that pay for their water. The ground is often murum or filled soil that drains poorly in the monsoon and bakes hard by April, and summer water cuts are familiar. We design soft areas to take monsoon water, favour native and drought-hardy planting over wide lawns, and size irrigation to the layout's treated STP water. What the society inherits is a landscape it can keep up without calling tankers. The work is carried from our base in the region by named people, start to finish, not passed down a chain.

A premium landscape that dies in a dry spell was never premium.
Local demand
What drives sustainable landscaping in Kalyan-Dombivli.
Industry is the second. Chemical units in Dombivli MIDC carry green-belt conditions in their consents and clearances, often on plots with little room left, and the housing beside them wants a buffer it can see. The townships sell their open space and then hand it to societies that must keep it alive. The older wards (around Kalyan station, and Dombivli's Ramnagar and Phadke Road neighbourhoods) have lost trees to decades of building. Municipal and CSR programmes look for native planting that gives these streets shade again.
Water is a live issue in Kalyan-Dombivli. KDMC draws its supply from the Ulhas, and the city has seen summer cuts as demand from new layouts rises. Large projects usually carry clearance conditions to reuse treated water from their own STPs, and landscape irrigation is where most of that water goes. Developers who design the garden around that water, rather than around municipal supply, hand over a landscape that survives April. Societies notice the difference the first time the neighbours call for tankers.

Straight answers
Sustainable Landscaping in Kalyan-Dombivli: common questions.
01The treated STP water reaching our township garden smells. Is it safe for the plants?
Smell usually means the STP is not treating fully or the water sits too long in storage, not that plants will suffer at once. Poorly treated water can clog drippers and, over time, harm soil and roots. We test the treated water, check the plant's operation and storage, and adjust the irrigation so the garden and the residents both get water fit for use.
02Our plot backs onto mangroves along the Ulhas creek. What can we plant there?
Nothing within the mangrove area itself, and the buffer the Bombay High Court has set around mangroves limits work next to it. On your side of that line, choose native species that will not spread into the wetland, and keep lawns and fertiliser away from the edge. We map the mangrove boundary first and plan the planting from there.
03How long does sustainable landscaping take in Kalyan-Dombivli, and who is involved?
KDMC Tree Authority · KDMC Garden Department · Maharashtra Forest Department (Mangrove Cell) · MPCB Kalyan are the bodies a Kalyan-Dombivli project works with. On timing: design to execution by scope; maintenance optional. KIPL sets out a realistic Kalyan-Dombivli schedule once the site and the scope have been read, and carries the work through to the outcome, with comparable work on the record such as IRRIGATION WORK AT TCS BANYAN PARK.
