Navi Mumbai was planned with its green in it. CIDCO laid out the nodes with avenue trees, gardens and open spaces, and the city sits between the mangroves of Thane Creek and the Parsik hills. That green is now under steady pressure. Old CIDCO housing is being redeveloped, industrial plots are changing use, and new nodes are rising towards the airport. Each change touches trees, gardens or wetland edges: and each needs planting that survives the heat, the salt air and a heavy monsoon.
Navi Mumbai's gardens are a large, shared asset. The NMMC Garden Department looks after neighbourhood gardens across the nodes, and CIDCO built Central Park in Kharghar. New townships towards Ulwe and the airport add recreation grounds that someone must design and then maintain. The climate is hard on them: a long dry summer, then months of heavy rain on clay soil. A garden here has to drain well, keep its shade and survive May. Families use these spaces every evening. The work is carried from our base in the region by named people, start to finish, not passed down a chain.

01Can a public garden in Navi Mumbai be watered with treated sewage instead of drinking water?
Yes, and in a dry May it often must be. NMMC runs sewage treatment plants across the city, and treated water can reach a garden by pipeline or tanker where a supply is arranged. Townships can use their own STP. The water has to meet the reuse standard, and drip or sprinkler lines, not open hoses, keep use in check. Lawns are kept small so the supply goes further.
02Our CIDCO society in Vashi is going for redevelopment. Do we need permission for the trees in the compound?
Yes. Trees inside a private compound are still protected under the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975. Felling or moving them needs permission from the NMMC Tree Authority, based on a tree census. Permission usually comes with compensatory planting or transplantation conditions. The census is best done before the building plans are final, so healthy trees can be kept where possible.
