Kalyan-Dombivli's green runs along its water. The Ulhas bends past Kalyan's Durgadi fort and widens into a creek lined with mangroves west of Dombivli, and the Waldhuni joins it at Kalyan. To the north, towards Titwala and the Kalu river, farmland and low hills still hold open ground. Between these edges lie a dense old railway town and a chemical estate with little canopy of its own. Green work here means shade for crowded wards, buffers around industry, and planting that suits the new townships.

Kalyan-Dombivli has few large public gardens and a great many people who use the small ones. The lake precinct at Kala Talao, neighbourhood gardens in Dombivli and the open spaces the new townships hand over carry heavy evening crowds, and in the monsoon their low corners take water. We plan paths, shade and seating around how each space is actually used, build them to take the wear, and set up maintenance that sees the garden through its first hot summers. Industry is the second. Chemical units in Dombivli MIDC carry green-belt conditions in their consents and clearances, often on plots with little room left, and the housing beside them wants a buffer it can see. The townships sell their open space and then hand it to societies that must keep it alive. The older wards (around Kalyan station, and Dombivli's Ramnagar and Phadke Road neighbourhoods) have lost trees to decades of building. Municipal and CSR programmes look for native planting that gives these streets shade again.

Kalyan and Dombivli grew as commuter towns, and public space came second to housing. The gardens that exist are small, and the population they serve has grown many times over. Much new open space now arrives through township layouts, which reserve amenity land and later hand it to a federation or to KDMC. Work around Kala Talao under KDMC's Smart City programme showed what a restored public edge can mean to a crowded ward. The need is for more such spaces that cost little to keep.

01The garden in our Dombivli ward floods every July. Can it be redesigned without closing it for a year?

Usually, in stages. We survey levels and drains, then rework the lowest section first (raising paths, adding a swale or soak pits, and replacing lawn with planting that tolerates standing water) while the rest stays open. Each stage is finished before the next monsoon. Most of the cost goes into drainage that visitors never see.
