Bhiwandi has lost its green in two ways at once. The old town grew wall to wall around its looms, leaving lanes with barely a tree and few gardens. Out on the highway, farmland and scrub became acres of roofing and truck yards that hold the day's heat long into the evening. Between them run the Kamwari river and the creek edge towards Kasheli. Green work here means putting shade back where people work and live: on ground that floods in July and bakes in April.
Public green in Bhiwandi is thin on the ground. The old town has few gardens for the number of people living in it, and those it has are crowded with children and families in the evenings. We plan paths, shade, seating and planting for how a small garden will actually be used, build it to take that load and the monsoon runoff, and set up maintenance that carries it through the dry months.
