Kharghar is built against a hill. The slopes rise behind the upper sectors to a plateau of grass and scattered trees, and in the monsoon the Pandavkada falls run off them. Below, CIDCO laid out Central Park and a golf course across a wide stretch of the node. On the other side, wetlands and mangroves hold the creek edge. Between them sit dense housing sectors, with gardens and avenue trees planted as the node was built. Green work here means joining these edges: for the people who walk between them every morning.
Central Park and the golf course are Kharghar's large public green, built by CIDCO and busy every evening and weekend. The sector gardens are smaller and more numerous, looked after by CIDCO or the Panvel corporation depending on how far the handover has reached. Both face the same climate: open, exposed ground that bakes in April and runs with water off the hill in July. We plan shade, paths and drainage for how people use each place, and set up care that carries it past the first summer. The work is carried from our base in the region by named people, start to finish, not passed down a chain.

01Our sector garden floods from the hill every monsoon. Can the design fix that?
Usually, yes. Water coming off the slope needs a path through the garden, not across it: a swale or planted channel along the upper edge, permeable paths, and beds raised slightly above the flow line. The outlet has to join a working drain. We watch where the water enters and leaves during a heavy spell before redrawing anything.
02Grass fires reach the hill foot every summer. Can planting along our boundary reduce the risk?
It helps if it is done carefully. A cleared firebreak strip along the boundary, kept free of dry grass from February, does more than any planting. Behind it, green-leaved native trees and watered shrubs burn far less readily than dry grass. We design the strip and the planting together, and time the clearing before the dry months set in.
