Panvel's green lies in pieces between a forest and a building front. To the south, Karnala's bird sanctuary holds dense forest on the hill below its fort. In the old town, Vadale lake and the Gadhi river are the green most residents know. The CIDCO nodes of Kamothe, Kalamboli and New Panvel have avenue trees and small gardens, and the villages towards the airport still have mango, tamarind and banyan in their lanes. 01Our society garden in Kamothe is on hard murum and the lawn dies every summer. What should we change?
Reduce the lawn and improve what lies under it. On murum, grass needs deep soil and daily water in April, which few societies can afford. We keep a small lawn where children play, replace the rest with native shrubs and shade trees in prepared pits, and add mulch and drip lines. The garden looks different, but it stays green.
02Does being near Karnala change what we can plant or build?
It can. Karnala Bird Sanctuary is protected, and land close to it may fall within its eco-sensitive zone, where some activities are restricted or need Forest Department clearance. Planting there should favour native forest species and avoid exotics that spread. We check the site's distance from the boundary first and plan around what it allows.
