Turbhe marks the southern tail of the TTC belt, where chemical works, engineering shops and warehouses fill the ground from the highway back to where the Parsik range rises. The name also covers a busy transport hub: a truck terminal, a station on the Trans-Harbour line, and dense settlements that have grown up on the hill slopes and around old quarries. The municipal landfill lies nearby. Vashi's and Sanpada's housing sectors begin just across the road. Few parts of Navi Mumbai are more industrial, or more crowded, and lorries fill its roads at most hours.

In Turbhe, heavy industry, waste and dense housing press against one another. Chemical units run under consents with detailed conditions and pipe their effluent to a common plant. Older plots carry the risk of past contamination when they change hands. Waste of many kinds passes through the area on its way to treatment or disposal. And families on the hill slopes live close enough to the units to notice dust, odour and smoke first.

Straight answers

Turbhe: common questions.

01We plan to add a product at our Turbhe unit. Does the consent need changing?

If the new product changes the raw materials, effluent, emissions or hazardous waste, yes: usually an amendment, occasionally a fresh consent. Some changes also touch an existing environment clearance. We set the new process beside the current consent and tell you which route applies before production begins.

02The seller has shown us a clean MPCB record. Is a site audit still worth doing?

Yes. A clean consent record shows the unit met its conditions on paper; it says nothing about spills, leaking tanks or waste buried long ago. A site inspection with targeted sampling covers that gap. For an older chemical plot we would recommend both before the deed is signed.

03Our plot is almost fully built over. How do we satisfy the green-belt clause?

Use every strip that remains (boundaries, setbacks, parking edges) and plant them densely. Where the ground is genuinely too short, record the shortfall honestly and discuss options with MPCB rather than hoping it passes unnoticed. We map the available space and design planting that makes every metre count.

04The common plant says our COD is too high. What is the quickest fix?

Find the source first, usually one process stream or a batch wash. Isolating that stream for separate handling, or reducing it at source, normally brings the combined effluent within limits sooner than rebuilding the whole plant. We sample the streams one by one and recommend the fastest fix that will last.

05How long should our unit keep its environmental records?

Through the consent period and beyond it, since enforcement can look back, which in practice means several years at least. Monitoring reports, waste manifests, returns and correspondence with the board belong together. We arrange a plain filing system, one folder per obligation, so anything asked for can be found quickly.
