Mumbai has little open ground and a great deal of weather. Green space here is carved from reserved plots, road medians, society compounds, podium decks and the margins of Aarey and Sanjay Gandhi National Park, and it has to survive four months of heavy monsoon followed by a long dry season. Salt wind reaches the western shoreline; reclaimed land in the island city carries fill rather than soil. No tree on a development site can be felled or moved without the Tree Authority's permission. Planting here is less about space than about what will survive.

Mumbai took up Miyawaki plantation as a municipal programme, and it suits the city's land: small leftover plots, the edges of recreation grounds, strips beside nullahs. For MCGM we have planted dense native forest at 27 locations across seven wards of the eastern suburbs. The ground is often debris fill or compacted murum, so soil preparation carries the project. Planting is timed to the monsoon's arrival, and the first two dry seasons decide survival: watering, mulching and replacing losses until the canopy closes. The work is carried from our base in the region by named people, start to finish, not passed down a chain.

The first driver is civic. Corporates fund them through CSR, housing societies and schools ask for them on spare ground, and the corporation has used them in its wards. The demand is for forest still there when attention moves on.
