Kalyan-Dombivli's green runs along its water. The Ulhas bends past Kalyan's Durgadi fort and widens into a creek lined with mangroves west of Dombivli, and the Waldhuni joins it at Kalyan. To the north, towards Titwala and the Kalu river, farmland and low hills still hold open ground. Between these edges lie a dense old railway town and a chemical estate with little canopy of its own. Green work here means shade for crowded wards, buffers around industry, and planting that suits the new townships.
Space for a Miyawaki plot in Kalyan-Dombivli turns up in unlikely places: a municipal school ground in Kalyan's older wards, an open-space reservation in a township, a boundary strip inside a Dombivli MIDC plot. Much of this land is murum or construction fill, so the soil is opened, amended and drained before any sapling goes in. Species come from the native deciduous forest of the Konkan foothills. We count survival through the first dry season and replant the gaps, so residents see a forest rather than a signboard. The work is carried from our base in the region by named people, start to finish, not passed down a chain.

Local demand
What drives miyawaki urban dense forestation in Kalyan-Dombivli.
Industry is the second. Chemical units in Dombivli MIDC carry green-belt conditions in their consents and clearances, often on plots with little room left, and the housing beside them wants a buffer it can see. The townships sell their open space and then hand it to societies that must keep it alive. The older wards (around Kalyan station, and Dombivli's Ramnagar and Phadke Road neighbourhoods) have lost trees to decades of building. Municipal and CSR programmes look for native planting that gives these streets shade again.
Kalyan-Dombivli's canopy is thinnest where people live closest together. The older station areas and the MIDC were built with little room for trees, and residents feel the heat of concrete through April and May. Companies in the chemical estate spending CSR money look for work their neighbours can see, and a dense native forest on a school ground or a boundary strip is visible within two monsoons. Township developers with plantation commitments want the same thing: planting that can be counted and seen to grow.
How it works
Miyawaki Urban Dense Forestation, from survey to survival.
- 01/05
Native species selection
A multi-layer palette of native species chosen to the soil, climate and the forest's intended structure.
- 02/05
Soil analysis & enhancement
Soil tested and amended with the biomass and nutrients dense planting needs to establish fast.
- 03/05
Dense plantation
Close, multi-layer planting on a marked grid, the density that makes a Miyawaki forest grow upward.
- 04/05
Maintenance & survival monitoring
Two to three years of watering, weeding and, crucially, measured survival, the number the whole method is judged on.
- 05/05
Carbon estimation
Where required, an estimate of the carbon sequestered, so the outcome is a figure, not a claim.

Straight answers
Miyawaki Urban Dense Forestation in Kalyan-Dombivli: common questions.
01Can a Miyawaki forest grow inside a chemical unit's compound in Dombivli MIDC?
Often it can, with the right soil and species. We test the ground for residues where the plot's history calls for it, bring in clean topsoil and compost if needed, and choose natives known to tolerate fumes. The plot is kept clear of tanks, drains and fire-access routes, and it can add to the unit's recorded green cover.
02Our plot backs onto mangroves along the Ulhas creek. What can we plant there?
Nothing within the mangrove area itself, and the buffer the Bombay High Court has set around mangroves limits work next to it. On your side of that line, choose native species that will not spread into the wetland, and keep lawns and fertiliser away from the edge. We map the mangrove boundary first and plan the planting from there.
03How long does miyawaki urban dense forestation take in Kalyan-Dombivli, and who is involved?
KDMC Tree Authority · KDMC Garden Department · Maharashtra Forest Department (Mangrove Cell) · MPCB Kalyan are the bodies a Kalyan-Dombivli project works with. On timing: plantation seasonal; monitoring 2–3 years. KIPL sets out a realistic Kalyan-Dombivli schedule once the site and the scope have been read, and carries the work through to the outcome, with comparable work on the record such as MCGM GARDEN DEVELOPMENT- MIYAWAKI PLANTATION.
