Kalyan-Dombivli's green runs along its water. The Ulhas bends past Kalyan's Durgadi fort and widens into a creek lined with mangroves west of Dombivli, and the Waldhuni joins it at Kalyan. To the north, towards Titwala and the Kalu river, farmland and low hills still hold open ground. Between these edges lie a dense old railway town and a chemical estate with little canopy of its own. Green work here means shade for crowded wards, buffers around industry, and planting that suits the new townships.

Green belts in Kalyan-Dombivli are mostly a Dombivli MIDC matter. Chemical units carry belt conditions in their consents and clearances, and many plots were built out long before those conditions were enforced as closely as they are now. The belt has to work in a narrow strip beside a compound wall, often facing housing across the road. We choose native species that tolerate fumes and waterlogging, plant them in dense rows where they screen the neighbours, and keep a tree-by-tree record for MPCB's Kalyan office. The work is carried from our base in the region by named people, start to finish, not passed down a chain.

The clearance asks for a third of the plot in green. We make that third actually work.

Local demand

What drives green belt development for industries in Kalyan-Dombivli.

Industry is the second. Chemical units in Dombivli MIDC carry green-belt conditions in their consents and clearances, often on plots with little room left, and the housing beside them wants a buffer it can see. The townships sell their open space and then hand it to societies that must keep it alive. The older wards (around Kalyan station, and Dombivli's Ramnagar and Phadke Road neighbourhoods) have lost trees to decades of building. Municipal and CSR programmes look for native planting that gives these streets shade again.

Pressure on Dombivli MIDC has risen since the reactor explosions, and residents of the neighbouring colonies now look hard at every boundary wall. A green belt is one of the few things a chemical unit can show on the ground rather than on paper. Consent renewals check it, and so do neighbours walking past. Units expanding or changing products may face a fresh clearance with its own green-cover condition. On plots this tight, the job is getting the most canopy out of every strip.

Straight answers

Green Belt Development for Industries in Kalyan-Dombivli: common questions.

01Our Dombivli plot has a tank farm along one boundary. Can we plant a green belt near it?

Yes, with care. Trees are kept a safe distance from storage tanks, pipe racks and hydrant lines, and away from bunds their roots could damage. Low native shrubs can fill the ground nearer the tanks, with taller trees further out. We plan the belt with your safety officer so it meets the green condition without adding a hazard.

02Can a green belt really make a difference around a Dombivli chemical unit?

It will not treat an emission, but it does trap dust, soften noise and screen a boundary: and it shows neighbours that the unit has them in mind. A dense, multi-row belt of native trees that tolerate fumes does far more than a single row of ornamentals. We plant it to the consent condition and keep the records MPCB can check.

03How long does green belt development for industries take in Kalyan-Dombivli, and who is involved?

KDMC Tree Authority · KDMC Garden Department · Maharashtra Forest Department (Mangrove Cell) · MPCB Kalyan are the bodies a Kalyan-Dombivli project works with. On timing: planting seasonal; establishment 2–3 years. KIPL sets out a realistic Kalyan-Dombivli schedule once the site and the scope have been read, and carries the work through to the outcome, with comparable work on the record such as Miyawaki Plantations at Jamnagar and Junagadh.
