Shahad sits on the boundary between Ulhasnagar and Kalyan, around its railway station and the road that runs from Kalyan towards Murbad. The Ulhas flows close by. The area is best known for the large Century Rayon works, a long-established plant producing viscose rayon and chemicals, whose campus occupies a large tract of land. Around it are older residential colonies, markets and, more and more, new residential towers. Few places in this crowded belt put heavy industry, a river and new housing so close together, and the view from a fresh tower balcony often takes in all three.
Shahad's questions concern a long-established process plant with a river alongside and housing growing around it. Effluent and emissions from large chemical and fibre operations are closely watched. Legacy land within and near older industrial campuses may hold residues from decades of production. New housing brings people nearer to industrial boundaries. And a plant of this age has to show that its compliance has kept pace with modern standards and with its customers' expectations.

02We want to develop surplus land at an old industrial campus. Where should an audit begin?
The history of each part of the land (what was made, stored or disposed of there) and how the soil and groundwater look today in the places that history flags. We sample, report what we find and set out remediation needs before planning goes further.
03Our green belt is decades old. Do old trees still count?
Yes, as long as they are standing and healthy. What counts is the area under tree cover and the number of trees, as consent conditions usually state. We record the belt as it stands, and plan replanting where gaps have opened.
04Our ETP meets its limits most days but not all. What does a review look at?
Flows and loads over time, the performance of each treatment stage, and the operating records around the days that failed. Occasional exceedances often trace back to peak loads, a failing unit or an operating lapse. We find the cause and recommend the fix: sometimes an operating change, sometimes new equipment.
05Our plant predates the EIA rules. Does an expansion still need a clearance?
Yes, if the expansion itself falls within the schedule or raises pollution load. Plants built before 1994 did not need a clearance at the time, but expansions and modernisations are judged under current rules. We examine the proposal and advise which parts need appraisal.
