ESG Advisory and Reporting for Manufacturers
Most unlisted manufacturers meet ESG not through a regulator but through a customer: a listed buyer with BRSR obligations asking for emissions, energy, water and compliance data from its value chain, on a deadline, in a format.
Screening view on your project, with the category and route named. No obligation.
What this means for industrial & manufacturing
Listed companies in India report on the SEBI Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting framework, and the framework reaches beyond the reporting entity into its value chain, with assurance expectations on core indicators tightening over time. The practical consequence for a supplier is a questionnaire: greenhouse gas emissions from your operations and purchased energy, energy and fuel consumption, water withdrawal and discharge, waste generated and how it was disposed, whether your consents and authorisations are current, whether you have had notices or prosecutions, and increasingly your EPR position. These are not new facts, a manufacturing unit already generates almost all of them for its consent returns, Form-V, energy bills and hazardous waste records. What is missing is usually the boundary discipline, the conversion methodology and the consistency to produce them in a form that survives a customer's own assurance process. Answering with an estimate that contradicts your own Form-V is worse than answering late.
How KIPL runs it
KIPL builds a manufacturer's ESG position from its regulatory data rather than from a separate parallel exercise: define the reporting boundary and period, compute Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions from fuel, DG and purchased electricity records with stated emission factors and methodology, assemble water, waste and energy figures that reconcile to the consent returns and Form-V, and set out the compliance position (consents, authorisations, EPR registration, open notices) as it actually stands. From there the same dataset answers customer questionnaires, feeds a supplier disclosure, and supports whatever ESG statement the company chooses to publish. We do not manufacture ratings or claim outcomes; the value is that the numbers are traceable to source records and consistent with the filings a regulator already holds. Where a customer asks for Scope 3 categories, we are explicit about which are estimable from available data and which are not, because an unfounded number in a value chain disclosure is a liability for both parties.
- BRSR
Listed customers pass the ask down
SEBI's Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting framework reaches into the value chain, so unlisted suppliers receive the data request even though the obligation sits with the buyer.
Scope 3 makes suppliers the data source
A buyer's value chain emissions are its suppliers' operational emissions, so the request for energy, fuel and process data lands on the manufacturer that actually holds the meters.
Disclosure has to match your filings
Water, waste, energy and compliance figures given to a customer are checkable against Form-V, consent returns and EPR filings. Inconsistency is a commercial and regulatory exposure at once.
What you receive
Written for industrial & manufacturing, not adapted from a template.
- 01Reporting boundary and period defined for the unit or group, with the data sources named for each indicator
- 02Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas inventory from fuel, DG and purchased electricity records, with stated methodology and emission factors
- 03Energy, water, effluent and waste dataset reconciled to consent returns, Form-V and hazardous waste records
- 04Compliance position statement: consents, authorisations, EPR registration, EC conditions and any open notices
- 05Customer questionnaire response pack, reusable across buyers, with a documented basis for every figure
- 06Explicit note on which Scope 3 categories are estimable from available data and which are not, with the assumptions stated
Questions from industrial & manufacturing
What industrial & manufacturing ask before appointing us.
Answered against the regulation as it stands, not as a sales pitch. If your situation is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a question →We are unlisted. Why are we being asked for BRSR data?
Because your customer is listed and its reporting framework extends into its value chain. The obligation is theirs, but the data is yours, and increasingly the request arrives as a condition of supply rather than as a courtesy. The practical answer is to prepare the dataset once, from your own operating records, so each buyer's questionnaire is a reformatting exercise rather than a fresh project.
Where does the emissions data actually come from?
From records the plant already keeps: fuel purchase and consumption for boilers and furnaces, diesel for DG sets, and purchased electricity units from the utility bill. Scope 1 covers what you burn on site and Scope 2 covers purchased energy, and both are computed with stated emission factors so the number is reproducible. The work is in defining the boundary and being consistent year on year, not in finding exotic data.
Can we report Scope 3 emissions?
Partially, and only where the underlying data supports it. Some categories (purchased goods, upstream transport, employee commuting) can be estimated with stated assumptions; others cannot be estimated credibly without supplier data you do not have. The right approach is to report what is defensible, state the method, and be explicit about what is excluded. An invented Scope 3 figure becomes someone else's disclosure.
Does our ESG disclosure have to match our regulatory filings?
It must. Water withdrawal, effluent discharge, waste generated and disposed and your compliance history are all reported to the Board in Form-V and in consent returns, and a customer or an assurer can compare. Where a company reports better numbers to a customer than to a regulator, it has created a problem in two directions at once.
Do we need this if no customer has asked yet?
It is worth having the dataset before the request arrives, because the first request usually comes with a short deadline and a format. The underlying work (boundary, emissions computation, reconciled water and waste figures) takes time to do properly and almost no time to reuse. Units that assemble it under deadline pressure tend to submit estimates they later have to correct.
Will this get us an ESG rating?
Ratings are assigned by third-party agencies on their own methodologies, and no consultant can promise an outcome. What defensible, traceable data does is remove the most common reason for a poor assessment, which is missing or inconsistent disclosure. We build the data and the compliance position; the rating, where one is sought, follows from that and from the company's actual performance.
