Supplier and Value-Chain ESG Data: getting credible numbers from people you do not control.

Value-chain ESG work is the discipline of obtaining reliable environmental and social data from suppliers and customers who are outside your management control but inside your disclosure boundary.

What it is

For most companies the majority of emissions, and much of the human rights and labour exposure, sits in the value chain rather than in owned operations. Disclosure frameworks have followed: Scope 3 accounting under the GHG Protocol requires data from suppliers and downstream users, customer questionnaires and CDP supply chain requests push the same demand down the chain, and border measures such as the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (whose definitive regime commenced on 1 January 2026 for its covered goods including iron and steel, aluminium, cement, fertilisers, electricity and hydrogen) attach a commercial consequence to embedded emissions data that exporters must be able to produce.

KIPL builds these programmes to be proportionate. Suppliers are segmented by spend and by risk, so effort concentrates where it changes the number; data requests are standardised and kept to what will actually be used; primary data is sought from the segment where it matters and spend-based factors are used, and labelled as such, elsewhere. Where suppliers cannot produce credible data, which is common in Indian tiered supply chains. The answer is capability building rather than a more forceful questionnaire.

Straight answers

Supplier & Value-Chain ESG Data: common questions.

01What is value-chain ESG data?

It is environmental and social performance data obtained from entities upstream and downstream of a company (suppliers, contractors, logistics providers, distributors and customers) that a company needs for its own disclosure, target setting or customer requirements, but which it cannot generate itself.

02What does SEBI require on value chain disclosure?

The BRSR framework introduced disclosure in respect of value chain partners, defined as those upstream and downstream partners that individually comprise a share of purchases and sales by value, cumulatively covering the major part of the entity's trade. SEBI has revised the requirements and their timelines, including the extent to which they are mandatory, so applicability should be confirmed against the current circular rather than assumed from an earlier one.

03How does this relate to Scope 3 emissions?

Scope 3 is largely value-chain data expressed as emissions. Categories such as purchased goods and services, upstream transport and use of sold products can only be calculated accurately with supplier and customer inputs. Where those inputs do not exist, spend-based or average-data factors are used, which produce a defensible estimate but one too insensitive to show the effect of any supplier improvement.

04How is supplier data actually collected?

Through a segmented programme: identify the suppliers that matter by spend and emissions intensity, issue a standardised request covering only data that will be used, validate responses against plausibility rules, and escalate to primary data collection or a site visit for the highest-impact suppliers. Sending a long questionnaire to the whole supplier base produces a high non-response rate and unusable data.

05What is a supplier code of conduct and does it help?

It is a set of environmental, labour, safety and ethics requirements a company expects its suppliers to meet, typically incorporated by reference into purchase contracts. It helps only where it carries a mechanism: a right to audit, a self-assessment obligation, a corrective action process and a consequence. A code with none of those is a document rather than a control.

06Does the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism affect Indian suppliers?

Directly, for exporters of the covered goods. CBAM runs a transitional reporting period followed by a definitive regime that commenced on 1 January 2026, under which embedded emissions in covered imports carry a financial obligation on the EU importer. The practical effect on an Indian producer is that its EU customers require verifiable installation-level embedded emissions data, so the capability to produce it becomes a condition of continuing to supply.

07How can supplier-reported data be verified?

Through a tiered approach: automated plausibility checks and year-on-year comparison for all responses; documentary sampling for a proportion; site verification for the highest-impact suppliers; and acceptance of third-party verified or certified data where the supplier already holds it. Full verification of an entire supplier base is not achievable, so the design question is where verification effort changes a decision.
