JNPT / Nhava Sheva means the port and the ground it occupies: the container terminals of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority along the harbour, some run by the port and some by private operators, with liquid-cargo berths, rail sidings, container yards and the port's own township at Sheva. The old villages of Nhava and Sheva gave the port its name, and parts of them remain nearby. A large part of this land was once tidal creek and mudflat, filled to build the port. Trucks and trains serve the terminals around the clock, and the channel is dredged to keep large ships coming in.
The port's questions come from working at the water's edge at enormous scale. Every berth, jetty or yard extension sits in the coastal zone, often beside mangroves. Dredging stirs and moves sediment the harbour's fishing communities depend on. Diesel from trucks, cranes and ships adds to the air of the villages and the township. Ship waste, oil and cargo spills have to be managed. And each expansion adds to the load on a creek system that was already changed when the port was built.

01Does maintenance dredging of the port channel need a fresh environment clearance?
Often not, if it keeps to the depths and volumes already cleared and follows its conditions. Going deeper than the cleared depth, or dumping dredged material somewhere new, generally counts as a change needing appraisal. We set the planned campaign beside the clearance on record and say which path it takes.
02Our terminal operates under the port's clearance. Who files the compliance report?
The holder of the clearance files it, but the terminal operator usually has to supply the data for its own area. The concession agreement often sets out who does what. Misaligned reports are a common problem. We help both sides agree roles and assemble one consistent report.
03Why do the trees in our port green belt keep dying?
Usually salt and waterlogging. Reclaimed ground stays salty, with groundwater just below the surface. Raised beds, soil improvement and species that tolerate salt, such as those that grow naturally behind mangroves, survive far better. Soil tests guide our choice of species and planting methods.
04Can treated sewage be used for dust suppression in our container yard?
Yes, if it is treated to the standard for that use and disinfected, since workers and drivers are exposed to the spray. Many ports and yards use it that way, saving fresh water. We check the plant's output quality and set up the storage and distribution.
05Our container yard near the port is on reclaimed land. Does CRZ still apply?
It can. Reclaimed land within the zone does not stop being coastal land because it is now dry, and its category comes from the sanctioned zone map. Much of the port area is mapped inside the zone. We read the yard's position on that map and list the permissions it needs.
