Port projects at Nhava Sheva (a new berth, a terminal extension, deeper dredging, additional liquid-cargo handling) fall under the ports and harbours entry of the EIA Notification, often at the central level. The appraisal wants modelling of what the work does to currents, sediment and shoreline, marine ecology surveys and a clear plan for dredged material. We plan the studies with the project engineers from the start, so the hydrodynamic and ecological work supports the same design the port intends to build.
JNPT / Nhava Sheva means the port and the ground it occupies: the container terminals of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority along the harbour, some run by the port and some by private operators, with liquid-cargo berths, rail sidings, container yards and the port's own township at Sheva. The old villages of Nhava and Sheva gave the port its name, and parts of them remain nearby. A large part of this land was once tidal creek and mudflat, filled to build the port. Trucks and trains serve the terminals around the clock, and the channel is dredged to keep large ships coming in.
