Karanja is at Uran's southern end, where the land reaches the mouth of the creek facing Rewas and the Alibaug coast. It is a fishing place first: boats land their catch at its harbour, and fish drying, ice and net work fill the shore. A ferry crosses from here to Rewas. A naval establishment occupies part of the area, and new port and terminal development has come to the creek. Mangroves line much of the shore, and the villages behind it mix fishing families with farmers and workers who commute to the port.
Karanja's questions come from a working fishing shore meeting new marine development. Fish waste, plastic and sewage collect on the shore and in the water near the harbour. New jetties, dredging and terminal work affect the creek, its mangroves and the fishing grounds the villages use. When a spring tide coincides with heavy rain, low ground goes under water. And the villages need water, sanitation and waste services that keep up with a growing population.

Straight answers
Karanja: common questions.
01Can our fishing co-operative build a net-mending shed on the Karanja shore?
Facilities for local fishing communities are among the activities CRZ rules allow near the shore, subject to conditions and approval. The site must avoid mangroves, and the local body usually has to support the application. We check the site and help prepare the file.
02Can CER funds from a port project go to Karanja's fishing villages?
Often yes, where the villages are among those affected. The clearance may name specific activities or areas. We read the condition, consult the villages and propose work that meets both.
03What can be done with fish waste from the harbour?
It can be composted with dry material, sent to fish-meal units, or processed in a biogas plant. What matters is collecting it quickly in covered containers. Dumping it on the shore spreads smell and disease. We assess the quantity and set up the route.
04The water near our fish landing smells. What can the village do?
Find where the smell comes from: often household sewage entering near the landing, or fish waste left on the shore. Intercepting that drain and clearing waste quickly usually helps most. Water tests before and after show whether it works. We help plan and test.
05Can a small village have its own sewage plant?
Yes. Compact plants for a few hundred homes exist, and some need little power. The key is a clear owner, often the gram panchayat, and someone trained to run it. We size and design the plant and help set up the operation.
