Green belts around the port are planted on reclaimed land that is salty, windy and waterlogged in the monsoon. Common garden species die here. What survives are salt-tolerant natives and mangrove associates, planted in raised mounds of improved soil with drainage. We plan belts between terminals and the villages and township, screen container yards along the roads, and water with treated sewage through the dry months. Each tree is numbered for the compliance report.
JNPT / Nhava Sheva means the port and the ground it occupies: the container terminals of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority along the harbour, some run by the port and some by private operators, with liquid-cargo berths, rail sidings, container yards and the port's own township at Sheva. The old villages of Nhava and Sheva gave the port its name, and parts of them remain nearby. A large part of this land was once tidal creek and mudflat, filled to build the port. Trucks and trains serve the terminals around the clock, and the channel is dredged to keep large ships coming in.
How it works
Green Belt Development for Industries, from survey to survival.
- 01/04
Condition & buffer planning
The EC and consent green-cover conditions read, and a buffer plan sized and structured to meet them on the available plot.
- 02/04
Species selection
Pollution- and dust-tolerant native species chosen for attenuation, screening and survival at an industrial boundary.
- 03/04
Planting & establishment
Multi-row planting and the establishment care a buffer needs to close its canopy.
- 04/04
Compliance records
Documentation of the green cover developed and maintained, for the post-EC compliance file.

Green Belt Development for Industries in JNPT / Nhava Sheva: common questions.
01Why do the trees in our port green belt keep dying?
Usually salt and waterlogging. Reclaimed ground stays salty, with groundwater just below the surface. Raised beds, soil improvement and species that tolerate salt, such as those that grow naturally behind mangroves, survive far better. Soil tests guide our choice of species and planting methods.
02How long does green belt development for industries take in JNPT / Nhava Sheva?
On timing: planting seasonal; establishment 2–3 years. A realistic JNPT / Nhava Sheva schedule is set once the site and the scope have been read, and the work is carried through to the outcome by the same named people.
