ONGC Uran is the area around ONGC's processing plant, which takes in crude and gas piped ashore from the fields off Mumbai and processes them before they go on to refineries and consumers. The plant's columns, flares and tank farms sit on low land near the creeks, and other energy installations stand in the same belt, including a gas-fired power station and LPG storage. Villages lie close by, many of them fishing and farming communities that predate the plant. Pipelines, access roads and the plant's own township and facilities spread across the area.
The questions around ONGC Uran are those of a hazardous installation beside villages and creeks. Flaring, emissions and noise reach the settlements around it. Storage of flammable liquids and gas raises questions of safety and emergency planning. Pipelines cross creeks and mangroves. Old spills may have left oil in soil or water. And the fishing and farming communities around the plant expect a fair share of what it earns, returned as local investment.

Straight answers
ONGC Uran: common questions.
01Our contractor is adding storage tanks at an Uran installation. Does that need clearance?
Possibly. Storage of hazardous chemicals above certain quantities is a scheduled activity, and adding tanks can change an existing clearance. It turns on the substance, the quantity and the scope of the clearance already held. We check against both before the work begins.
02Our clearance requires ambient monitoring in a nearby village. Who arranges it?
The clearance holder, usually through an accredited laboratory, with the station sited as the conditions require. Access to village land needs agreement with the owner. We arrange the station, sampling and reporting.
03Can trees be planted over or near a buried pipeline?
Not directly over it. Pipeline corridors usually need a clear strip for access and inspection, and roots can damage coatings. Shrubs and grasses may be allowed at the edge. We plan the green belt to respect the pipeline operator's rules.
04Why does our consent renewal need so much monitoring data?
Because the consent was granted on conditions, and renewal is when the regulator checks they were met. Stack, ambient, effluent and waste records show that. Gaps or exceedances without explanation delay renewal. We gather and review the data before filing.
05How would we know if an old leak has reached groundwater near our tanks?
Monitoring wells around the tank farm, sampled regularly for hydrocarbons, show it. If there are none, a few new ones and a round of sampling give a first picture. Soil samples near old spill points help too. We plan and carry out the investigation.
