Surat earns its living in three trades that sit a few kilometres apart. Diamonds are cut and polished in the workshops of Varachha, Katargam and Mahidharpura, and traded from the Surat Diamond Bourse at Khajod. Synthetic yarn is woven, dyed and printed across Pandesara, Sachin, Palsana and Kadodara, in processing houses that use a great deal of water and heat. And on the south bank of the Tapi's mouth, Hazira holds steel, petrochemicals, gas and ports. Each answers to GPCB's Surat office in its own way: and each now meets buyers who ask for proof.

Audits in Surat carry a Gujarat feature: under the state's environmental audit scheme, units in listed high-pollution categories are examined every year by an auditor GPCB has empanelled. Beyond that yearly audit, the city's industrial land changes hands often. Older dyeing sheds in Pandesara and Udhna are sold, split or converted, and the ground under them may hold dye residue, salts and sludge buried long ago. Buyers and lenders at Hazira and Sachin want that history on paper before money moves. The work is carried from our base in the region by named people, start to finish, not passed down a chain.

Before the money moves, someone has to price the liability. That's what the audit is for.

Local demand

What drives environmental audits in Surat.

Textile processing sets the pace. A dyeing or printing house in Pandesara or Sachin fires boilers and heaters for its jet-dyeing and stenter lines, draws water from GIDC supply or by tanker, and pipes its wastewater to the estate's shared plant under conditions GPCB checks closely. Export garment brands and the large Indian retailers that buy Surat fabric now ask those houses about chemicals, water, energy and consent status. SEBI's BRSR framework adds a second channel, because the listed companies that buy from Surat must describe their value chain. A processing house that answers one form well is better placed for the next.

Audit demand in Surat has a statutory core and a commercial edge. Gujarat's annual audit requirement covers many processing houses, and its report must be accurate enough to stand up if GPCB compares it with an inspection. Lenders and buyers of textile units in Pandesara, Sachin and Palsana want the buried history (soil, old drain lines, consent orders) laid out. Hazira operators order internal audits across sites before a customer's or a parent's audit team arrives.

Straight answers

Environmental Audits in Surat: common questions.

01We are weighing an offer for a dyeing shed in Pandesara. What would an audit look at?

The GPCB file first: past consents, any closure orders or directions against the unit. Then how effluent was handled before the common plant connection, whether sludge or drums lie buried in the yard, and whether soil and groundwater hold colour, salts or metals. We walk the shed, test where the records suggest trouble, and give the buyers a list they can put a price against.

02Which yearly environmental filings fall due for a unit in Hazira or Pandesara?

Form V, the Environmental Statement, reaches GPCB by 30 September; hazardous waste figures for the year go in by 30 June; the consent carries its own renewal date; EPR returns for plastic, batteries or electronics go through CPCB's online systems; and a unit holding an environment clearance reports on its conditions each half-year. We gather these dates, with the papers behind each, into a single register for the plant.

03How long does environmental audits take in Surat, and who is involved?

GPCB Surat regional office · SEIAA Gujarat · Gujarat Coastal Zone Management Authority · GIDC · SEBI's BRSR framework · CPCB's EPR portals are the bodies a Surat project works with. On timing: weeks, deal-timeline driven. KIPL sets out a realistic Surat schedule once the site and the scope have been read, and carries the work through to the outcome, with comparable work on the record such as SHENDRA AND BIDKIN INDUSTRIAL AREA, AURANGABAD.
