CRZ Clearance in Karanja, Uran.

Almost everything built on Karanja's shore (a jetty, a landing platform, a fish market, a protection wall) sits inside CRZ, often right beside mangroves. The CRZ Notification makes room for facilities that fishing communities need, but they still go through approval. We begin by locating each structure on the coastal zone map and a fresh tide-line survey; then we prepare the MCZMA file with the reports the authority expects.
Karanja is at Uran's southern end, where the land reaches the mouth of the creek facing Rewas and the Alibaug coast. It is a fishing place first: boats land their catch at its harbour, and fish drying, ice and net work fill the shore. A ferry crosses from here to Rewas. A naval establishment occupies part of the area, and new port and terminal development has come to the creek. Mangroves line much of the shore, and the villages behind it mix fishing families with farmers and workers who commute to the port.

CRZ Clearance in Karanja: common questions.
01Can our fishing co-operative build a net-mending shed on the Karanja shore?
Facilities for local fishing communities are among the activities CRZ rules allow near the shore, subject to conditions and approval. The site must avoid mangroves, and the local body usually has to support the application. We check the site and help prepare the file.
02How long does crz clearance take in Karanja?
On timing: 4–8 months, subject to mapping, scrutiny & MCZMA schedule. A realistic Karanja schedule is set once the site and the scope have been read, and the work is carried through to the outcome by the same named people.
