The ground this work sits on here.

The water around Karanja's harbour carries sewage from the villages, waste from boats and runoff from the shore. It is where the catch is landed and washed. Improvement starts on land: stopping sewage from reaching the harbour, screening drains that flow into the creek, and cleaning the shore regularly. Alongside the gram panchayat and fisheries officials, we find the outfalls, plan interception and treatment, and track water quality before and after.
Karanja is at Uran's southern end, where the land reaches the mouth of the creek facing Rewas and the Alibaug coast. It is a fishing place first: boats land their catch at its harbour, and fish drying, ice and net work fill the shore. A ferry crosses from here to Rewas. A naval establishment occupies part of the area, and new port and terminal development has come to the creek. Mangroves line much of the shore, and the villages behind it mix fishing families with farmers and workers who commute to the port.
How it works
Water Body Remediation, the route to grant.
- 01/05
Diagnosis
Sources of pollution, inflow quality, sediment and ecology assessed, what is wrong before what is done.
- 02/05
Interception & treatment
Sewage and effluent inflows intercepted and treated so the water body stops being fed pollution.
- 03/05
Desilting & bioremediation
Accumulated sediment removed and in-situ bioremediation and aeration used to rebuild water quality.
- 04/05
Ecological restoration
Native planting, buffers and habitat that stabilise banks and keep the system healthy.
- 05/05
Monitoring
Water-quality monitoring after the work, because a rejuvenation is judged over seasons, not on handover day.

Water Body Remediation in Karanja: common questions.
01The water near our fish landing smells. What can the village do?
Find where the smell comes from: often household sewage entering near the landing, or fish waste left on the shore. Intercepting that drain and clearing waste quickly usually helps most. Water tests before and after show whether it works. We help plan and test.
02How long does water body remediation take in Karanja?
On timing: diagnosis first; restoration by water-body scale. A realistic Karanja schedule is set once the site and the scope have been read, and the work is carried through to the outcome by the same named people.
