At a fishing harbour, waste comes in two kinds: fish waste and offal, which rot quickly and draw birds and dogs, and plastic, nets and packaging that wash back with the tide. Neither can wait. We set up covered collection for fish waste with a composting or processing route, separate points for plastic and nets, and a shore-cleaning schedule with the village body, so the harbour stays fit for the families working it.
Karanja is at Uran's southern end, where the land reaches the mouth of the creek facing Rewas and the Alibaug coast. It is a fishing place first: boats land their catch at its harbour, and fish drying, ice and net work fill the shore. A ferry crosses from here to Rewas. A naval establishment occupies part of the area, and new port and terminal development has come to the creek. Mangroves line much of the shore, and the villages behind it mix fishing families with farmers and workers who commute to the port.
How it works
Integrated Solid Waste Management, the route to grant.
- 01/05
Waste assessment
Quantities and composition measured across the wet, dry and domestic-hazardous streams, the basis for right-sizing everything.
- 02/05
Segregation & collection design
Colour-coded, source-level segregation and a collection flow the residents or staff will actually follow.
- 03/05
Material recovery
A recovery step for dry recyclables, cutting what goes to landfill and turning waste into value.
- 04/05
Decentralised processing
On-site composting or biomethanation for the wet fraction, sized to the load, with a plan for the finished compost or gas.
- 05/05
DPR & compliance
A detailed project report where needed and the records that satisfy the urban local body and the bulk-generator rules.

Integrated Solid Waste Management in Karanja: common questions.
01What can be done with fish waste from the harbour?
It can be composted with dry material, sent to fish-meal units, or processed in a biogas plant. What matters is collecting it quickly in covered containers. Dumping it on the shore spreads smell and disease. We assess the quantity and set up the route.
02How long does integrated solid waste management take in Karanja?
On timing: assessment in weeks; system by site scale. A realistic Karanja schedule is set once the site and the scope have been read, and the work is carried through to the outcome by the same named people.
