Integrated Solid Waste Management for Corporate Campuses
Segregation, recovery and diversion-from-landfill are reported metrics for a corporate group, so campus waste needs a system that produces records, not just a set of colour-coded bins.

What this means for corporate campuses
A campus generates several regulated streams at once, and each is governed separately. Municipal wet and dry waste falls under the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 with bulk generator duties attached; discarded electronics fall under the E-Waste (Management) Rules 2022; used batteries under the Battery Waste Management Rules 2022; used oil, spent solvents and contaminated waste from workshops and generator rooms under the Hazardous and Other Wastes Rules 2016. Each has its own authorised handler requirement and its own record. When a group reports a single diversion percentage, it is aggregating across all of these, and the number is only as good as the weakest record behind it.
How KIPL runs it
KIPL builds the campus system around the streams that actually exist on the site, established by walking it rather than by assuming a standard list, and then around the documentation each stream requires: authorised recycler details, manifests, and weighment. The characteristic finding on corporate campuses is not that waste is mishandled but that it cannot be evidenced: dry waste sold to a local scrap dealer with no authorisation, e-waste held in a store room for years because nobody wants to sign for it, and a diversion figure derived from a housekeeping contractor's estimate. Segregation discipline at the floor is the other half, and it depends on making the correct bin the easiest one to use.
- SWM 2016
Bulk generator duties on the campus
Segregation at source, on-site wet waste processing and handover of remaining streams to authorised handlers are duties the campus carries directly.
- E-Waste / Batteries
Separate rules for separate streams
Discarded electronics and used batteries are governed by their own rules, with authorised handler and record requirements distinct from municipal waste.
Diversion is reported and audited
Group waste disclosure aggregates every stream on the campus, so a stream without records weakens the whole reported figure.
What you receive
Written for corporate campuses, not adapted from a template.
- 01Stream-wise waste characterisation across canteen, offices, workshops, generator rooms and stores
- 02Segregation system design: bin regime, floor-level placement, collection route and housekeeping protocol
- 03Authorised handler mapping for each regulated stream, with authorisation validity verified
- 04Weighment and manifest record system producing auditable diversion data
- 05Storage arrangements for e-waste, batteries and hazardous streams pending authorised handover
- 06Reporting format aligned to the group's disclosure and to the local body's returns
Questions from corporate campuses
What corporate campuses ask before appointing us.
Answered against the regulation as it stands, not as a sales pitch. If your situation is not here, ask us directly.
Ask a question →Why is one waste system not enough for a campus?
Because the streams are regulated separately. Municipal waste under the SWM Rules 2016, discarded electronics under the E-Waste Rules 2022, used batteries under the Battery Waste Management Rules 2022 and hazardous streams under the Hazardous and Other Wastes Rules 2016 each carry their own handler and record requirements. A single housekeeping arrangement covering all of them will fail on at least one.
Our dry waste goes to a local scrap dealer. Is that a problem?
It is if the dealer is not an authorised recycler and there is no record of what was handed over. The campus needs to be able to show where each stream went and to whom, and an informal sale produces neither. This is one of the most common findings on campus audits and one of the easiest to fix.
What do we do with e-waste sitting in the store room?
Route it to an authorised recycler and take the record. Accumulated end-of-life electronics on campus are usually a signal that no owner was assigned rather than that disposal was refused. Assigning ownership and setting a disposal cycle resolves it.
How is the diversion percentage calculated credibly?
From weighed quantities by stream, with each disposal route documented, rather than from contractor estimates. Assurance providers now trace waste figures the same way they trace energy and water, so an estimated diversion number is a restatement risk for the group.
Who is accountable: the campus or the housekeeping contractor?
The campus, as the generator. The contractor can operate the system but the statutory duties and the records belong to the occupier, which is why the contract has to specify the segregation protocol, the handlers to be used and the records to be maintained.
Does the campus need waste authorisation from the pollution control board?
Where hazardous waste streams are generated and stored, an authorisation under the Hazardous and Other Wastes Rules 2016 applies, and campus consent conditions may address waste handling as well. The position depends on what the site actually generates, which is why the characterisation comes first.
