Organic Waste Converters for Corporate Campuses

A corporate campus with a canteen crosses the bulk waste generator threshold under the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016, which requires wet waste to be processed on site rather than handed to the municipal stream.

Screening view on your project, with the category and route named. No obligation.

What this means for corporate campuses

The Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 define bulk waste generators by premises size and quantity generated, and a campus with a functioning canteen reaches that definition easily. The duty that follows is specific: segregate at source into wet, dry and domestic hazardous fractions, and process wet waste on the premises as far as possible. For an estate head this is not an abstract obligation: it is enforced by the urban local body, it is a question at any campus audit, and the diversion figure it produces is reported upward as a waste metric by the group.

How KIPL runs it

KIPL sizes on-site processing against what the campus actually generates, which is rarely what a vendor's standard machine assumes. Canteen waste on a corporate campus is concentrated into two or three hours a day, is heavily seasonal around holidays and hybrid working patterns, and includes a share of packaging that arrives mixed no matter what the segregation policy says. That drives capacity, buffering and, crucially, what happens to the output, compost the campus has no use for accumulates in a corner and becomes its own finding. We settle the offtake before the machine is specified, and we treat segregation training and monitoring as part of the system rather than a housekeeping matter.

    Bulk waste generator obligations

The Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 require bulk waste generators to segregate at source and process wet waste on the premises as far as possible.

  • Local body enforcement and collection terms

Urban local bodies enforce the bulk generator duty directly and may refuse or charge for collection of unsegregated waste from a campus.

  • Diversion is a reported metric

Waste generated, diverted from landfill and processed on site are figures the group reports, so the system has to produce records rather than only outcomes.

What you receive

Written for corporate campuses, not adapted from a template.

  • 01Waste characterisation study across the canteen, pantries and office floors at actual occupancy
  • 02Capacity sizing against peak daily generation with buffering for the canteen's concentrated load
  • 03Converter selection, siting and utility requirements, with odour and leachate control addressed
  • 04Segregation system design: bin regime, collection route, housekeeping protocol and training
  • 05Compost offtake pathway settled before commissioning, on campus landscape or through an identified route
  • 06Weighment and record system producing the diversion data required for reporting and local body returns

Does our campus qualify as a bulk waste generator?

Under the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 the definition turns on the premises and the quantity of waste generated, and campuses with canteens generally fall within it. The practical test is to characterise and weigh what the campus produces rather than to estimate it, because the obligation and the equipment sizing both follow from that figure.

What must a bulk generator actually do?

Segregate waste at source into wet, dry and domestic hazardous streams, process wet waste on the premises as far as possible, and hand over the remaining fractions to authorised waste handlers. The local body enforces this and the campus is expected to hold records of what it processed and what it handed over.

What happens to the compost?

It has to have a destination settled in advance: campus landscape use is the obvious one, and where the campus cannot absorb the volume, an offtake arrangement is needed. Uncollected compost accumulating on site is one of the commonest findings on campus audits and defeats the purpose of the installation.

Why do organic waste converters end up unused?

Two reasons. The machine is sized on a nominal figure rather than measured generation, so it either cannot cope with the lunch peak or runs half empty; and segregation fails, so wet waste arrives contaminated with packaging and cutlery. Both are solved before procurement, not after.

Who operates it day to day?

Normally the housekeeping or facilities contractor, which is why the operating protocol, training and record-keeping have to be written into that contract. Where it is treated as an incidental duty, the machine runs when convenient and the records that the local body and the group's reporting need are not maintained.

Does the installation need any consent?

On-site processing of the campus's own wet waste under the bulk generator duty is generally handled within the campus's existing consent position, but where the campus holds consent from the state pollution control board the waste handling arrangement should be reflected in it. The safest course is to confirm the position with the board rather than assume the installation is outside it.
