Kasarvadavali lies towards the northern end of Thane's stretch of Ghodbunder Road, below the hills of Sanjay Gandhi National Park and short of the climb to Gaimukh. The village is still there, with its own lanes and houses, but most of the land around it has been built as townships in recent years, and some of the newest layouts reach right up to the foot of the hills. Metro Line 4 was planned with a station here, and the area is changing from the city's far edge into a connected neighbourhood. The forest is a constant presence: from windows, on walks, and sometimes on the roads at night.
Kasarvadavali sits right at the national park's edge, and its questions follow from that. Which plots fall within the eco-sensitive zone, and what does that allow? What forest entries sit in the old revenue records? How does new housing live alongside leopards and other animals that use the hills? Townships at the edge of the city also stretch water supply, sewage and waste services, and the landscapes they plant can either extend the forest or push invasive species into it.

Straight answers
Kasarvadavali: common questions.
01What can a township near the park do to reduce leopard encounters?
Mostly, remove what draws them in. Leopards come for stray dogs and pigs, and those come for open waste. Closed waste handling, lighting on paths near the boundary, no dense shrubbery beside walkways and a clear wall on the forest side all help. Residents should know what to do if they see one, and the Forest Department runs awareness work we can connect you with.
02Does a rating reward keeping the existing trees on our plot?
Most rating systems do, through credits for preserving natural topography and vegetation or restoring habitat. Retained mature trees also shade the site and help with heat-island measures. The design has to show them protected through construction. We map the trees worth keeping and tie them to the credits before the layout is fixed.
03Some trees on our plot are forest species. Do different rules apply to them?
Within Thane's municipal limits, the Tree Authority's permission covers them like any other tree, though native species can weigh more heavily in its decision and in the compensatory planting it sets. On land recorded as forest, forest law applies instead. We identify each tree and check which regime governs the ground it stands on.
04Our composting area is near the boundary wall facing the hill. Should it move?
It is worth moving if it can be. Any smell of food waste near the forest edge draws animals to the wall, and a composting area is usually quiet at night. If moving it is not possible, closed units, sealed storage and lighting help. We look at the layout and suggest where the process sits best.
05The 7/12 extract for part of our land says 'forest'. Does that end the project?
Not necessarily, but it has to be resolved first. The entry may reflect a notification that still applies, one later set aside, or a boundary drawn loosely. We trace its origin through the notifications and any court or government orders, and advise whether the land can be excluded, must stay as forest, or needs a diversion proposal.
