Vadodara is a chemicals and engineering city with a university town's habits. To the north-west, along the road to the Mahi, sit the Koyali refinery, the fertiliser and petrochemical complexes, and the Nandesari GIDC estate, dense with dye intermediates, bulk chemicals and pharmaceutical units.
