River and nalah rejuvenation: intercepting the pollution before restoring the channel.
A river or nalah is rejuvenated by stopping what enters it: interception and diversion of sewage outfalls comes first, and everything done in the channel afterwards depends on that.
What it is
Rejuvenation of a polluted stretch follows a sequence. An outfall survey establishes what discharges into the channel, where and at what flow. Interception and diversion then routes that sewage to a treatment plant. Where a plant is not yet available, in-drain or in-situ treatment is used as an interim measure with its limitations stated honestly. Only then does channel work (desilting, removal of accumulated solid waste, bank protection, riparian planting and flow restoration) deliver an improvement that lasts.
KIPL works to the water quality parameters that the governing programme or direction specifies, most often biochemical oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen and faecal coliform at fixed monitoring points, because those are the numbers a National Green Tribunal direction or a Central Pollution Control Board polluted-stretch assessment is judged on. We are equally clear about the constraints that decide outcomes on the ground: solid waste continuing to enter the channel, encroachment on the bank, and monsoon flows that reset unconsolidated work.

Straight answers
River & Nalah Rejuvenation: common questions.
01Why is interception and diversion the first step?
Because untreated sewage entering the channel is the loading that everything else is fighting. Desilting, aeration and dosing applied while raw sewage continues to discharge produce a temporary improvement that reverses as soon as the intervention stops. Diverting the outfalls to treatment is what changes the steady state of the stretch.
02What is in-drain treatment and when is it appropriate?
It is in-situ treatment applied within the drain itself, typically aeration with bioremediation dosing, to reduce organic load before the flow reaches the river. It is a legitimate interim measure where sewerage and treatment capacity do not yet exist, and it should be presented as such. It is not a substitute for treatment infrastructure, and describing it as one is how rejuvenation programmes lose credibility.
03Which parameters is success measured on?
Most commonly biochemical oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen and faecal coliform, with chemical oxygen demand, ammoniacal nitrogen and total suspended solids as supporting indicators, measured at fixed points and a fixed frequency. The Central Pollution Control Board's classification of polluted river stretches is built on such data, so the monitoring protocol should match the parameters the governing direction uses.
04What statutory obligation usually drives this work?
Directions of the National Green Tribunal, state river action plans and river conservation programmes, and Central and State Pollution Control Board assessments of polluted stretches. These set the target parameters, the reporting frequency and the accountable authority, which in turn determine the scope and the monitoring regime of any rejuvenation contract.
05Who is responsible for the stretch after the works?
The owning authority: usually the urban local body, an irrigation or water resources department, or a development authority. Continued outcomes depend on operating the treatment infrastructure, maintaining screens and interceptors, and preventing solid waste dumping and encroachment. Works without an operating owner regress, which is why the operating responsibility belongs in the scheme from the start.
06How does solid waste affect a rejuvenation scheme?
Substantially. Municipal solid waste dumped into a channel blocks screens, fouls pumps, holds organic load, and negates desilting within a season. Screening, trash booms and regular removal are necessary, but the durable answer sits upstream in municipal waste collection along the corridor rather than inside the channel.
07How long before improvement is visible?
Visual clarity and odour improve relatively quickly once loading is reduced, while the monitored parameters move over months and hold only where the interception is maintained. Any single monsoon can disturb unconsolidated bank and bed work, so both the programme and the reporting should be framed by season rather than by week.
