Compliance Calendar: every environmental due date a site owes, in one place.
A compliance calendar is the dated register of every environmental return, renewal and report a site owes: what is due, to which authority, and by when.
What it is
Indian environmental obligations do not arrive as one annual filing. A single operating site typically owes consent renewals under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1974 and the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act 1981, an annual Environmental Statement in Form-V under the Environment (Protection) Rules, an annual return under the Hazardous and Other Wastes (Management and Transboundary Movement) Rules 2016, half-yearly compliance reports against its Environment Clearance conditions, and whatever producer-responsibility returns its packaging, e-waste or battery streams attract. Each has its own authority, its own format and its own date.
KIPL builds that set into a single calendar keyed to the site rather than to a generic template: we read the actual consent conditions, the actual clearance letter and the actual authorisations, list only what applies, and attach an internal owner and a lead time to each item. The calendar is then maintained as consents are renewed, capacity changes and rules are amended, so it stays a working instrument rather than a document that was accurate on the day it was issued.

Straight answers
Compliance Calendar: common questions.
01What is an environmental compliance calendar?
It is a dated register of every environmental obligation a site owes (consent renewals, statutory returns, monitoring submissions and clearance-condition reports) with the authority, the due date and the person responsible against each one. It exists because the obligations sit under different statutes with different authorities and different dates, and nothing consolidates them for you.
02Which environmental returns actually recur every year?
For a typical operating unit: the Environmental Statement in Form-V, submitted to the State Pollution Control Board on or before 30 September for the year ending 31 March; the annual return under the Hazardous and Other Wastes Rules 2016, due by 30 June for the preceding year; and, where the site holds an Environment Clearance, half-yearly compliance reports due on 1 June and 1 December. Waste-stream and producer-responsibility returns sit on top of these.
03How is a compliance calendar different from a legal register?
A legal register answers which laws apply to this site and what each requires. A compliance calendar answers what is due, when, and from whom. The register is the source; the calendar is the operating schedule derived from it. A site needs both, and a calendar built without a register underneath it usually misses obligations rather than dates.
04How often does a consent to operate need renewal?
Validity depends on the pollution category (Red, Orange, Green or White) and on the State Pollution Control Board concerned, since boards apply the categorisation with their own validity periods and conditions. Renewal must be applied for before expiry, not after, and the lead time matters more than the date: an application filed on the day of expiry leaves a unit operating without a live consent while it is processed.
05Who is liable if a return is missed?
Liability under the Water Act, the Air Act and the Environment (Protection) Act 1986 rests with the occupier and, in the case of a company, with the persons in charge of the conduct of its business. The Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act 2023 replaced imprisonment with monetary penalties determined by adjudicating officers for a number of these offences: the consequence changed shape, the obligation did not soften.
06Does the calendar cover Environment Clearance conditions as well?
It should. An EC letter carries specific and general conditions (monitoring frequencies, greenbelt milestones, CER commitments, reporting to the regional office) and each of those is an obligation with a date. Building the clearance conditions into the same calendar as the consent returns is what prevents the common failure of a site that files its Form-V faithfully and never reports against its EC.
07Can one calendar cover several sites across different states?
Yes, and for a multi-state operator it should, because state boards differ in format, portal and practice while the central obligations stay the same. The calendar is built site by site, since consents and clearances are site-specific. And then rolled up so a corporate EHS function can see the whole estate and its exposures on one view.
