Powai Lake receives sewage and runoff from a crowded catchment, and water hyacinth, silt and low oxygen follow. Restoration starts outside the water: finding the inflows, diverting or treating sewage before it enters, and controlling silt from construction upstream. Inside the lake, the work is weed removal, aeration where it helps, and shore planting that filters runoff. The lake is also home to crocodiles and birds, so the methods must suit a living water body, not a tank.
Powai grew around its lake, created in the late nineteenth century by damming a stream for the city's water, though it was later dropped from the drinking supply. IIT Bombay occupies a large campus on its shore, and from the late 1980s the planned township of Hiranandani Gardens rose beside it, with towers, offices, schools and hospitals. The forested hills of the national park rise to the north, with Vihar Lake beyond. Mugger crocodiles still live in Powai Lake. Newer towers keep filling the gaps between the township and the hutments climbing the slopes.
How it works
Water Body Remediation, the route to grant.
- 01/05
Diagnosis
Sources of pollution, inflow quality, sediment and ecology assessed, what is wrong before what is done.
- 02/05
Interception & treatment
Sewage and effluent inflows intercepted and treated so the water body stops being fed pollution.
- 03/05
Desilting & bioremediation
Accumulated sediment removed and in-situ bioremediation and aeration used to rebuild water quality.
- 04/05
Ecological restoration
Native planting, buffers and habitat that stabilise banks and keep the system healthy.
- 05/05
Monitoring
Water-quality monitoring after the work, because a rejuvenation is judged over seasons, not on handover day.

Water Body Remediation in Powai: common questions.
01Can a housing society help restore Powai Lake?
Yes, mostly by what it sends to the lake. A society whose STP works properly and whose stormwater carries no sewage is already helping. Beyond that, societies can fund shore planting, clean-ups and monitoring with the civic body's permission. We can assess your own discharges and suggest where your contribution would do the most good.
02How long does water body remediation take in Powai?
On timing: diagnosis first; restoration by water-body scale. A realistic Powai schedule is set once the site and the scope have been read, and the work is carried through to the outcome by the same named people.
