Kamothe is a CIDCO residential node between Kharghar and Kalamboli, south of the Sion–Panvel highway, opposite Kharghar. It is made almost entirely of housing: sectors of mid-rise society buildings, with shops on the ground floor along the main roads, schools, small parks and the village that gave the node its name. Mansarovar and Khandeshwar stations on the harbour line serve it. Much of the land sits low, sloping towards creek and marsh in the west, and rain drains slowly in heavy spells. The node filled up fast, and its oldest buildings now need looking after.

Kamothe's questions are about keeping a dense, finished node working. Its drains must clear monsoon water from low sectors that go under in heavy downpours. Waste from thousands of households has to be segregated, collected and processed. Open space is limited to what was reserved in the plan, and it is used hard. And the first buildings need major repair, and some are coming up for redevelopment, with the construction and debris that follow.

Straight answers

Kamothe: common questions.

01Two societies in Kamothe want to redevelop together. Does that change the approvals?

It can. A combined project is assessed as one, and its larger built-up area may cross the clearance threshold that each building alone would not. It may also bring larger sewage and waste obligations. We calculate both ways, so the societies see the approvals each option carries before they decide.

02Our local garden turns into a pond every monsoon. Is that something design can solve?

Often. Raised paths and seating areas, a planted low zone that holds water for a few hours, and a clear outlet to the storm drain let a garden flood without being ruined. Blocked drains around it make things worse, so those need clearing too. We take levels across the garden and draw a plan for the corporation to approve.

03Our Kamothe building's STP floods whenever the road outside floods. What can we do?

Stop the road water getting in, and protect the equipment when it does. A raised kerb or sealed covers on tank openings, a flap valve fitted to the outlet and raised electrical panels deal with most cases. We check levels on the plot and the plant's connections before recommending anything larger.

04Our society has limited space. Can several buildings share one composter?

Yes, and it is often sensible. Neighbouring societies can share a unit on one plot, with a written agreement on space, costs, operation and who takes the compost. Each society still has to segregate at source. We size the shared unit and draft the arrangement.

05The shops below our building leave waste on the footpath every night. Who is responsible?

The shopkeepers, as generators, must segregate and hand over their waste to the collection system; dumping on the road is an offence under the municipal rules. The ward office enforces it. A joint meeting with shopkeepers and the ward usually works better than complaints. We can help set up the collection arrangement.
