Public gardens in Kolshet are often laid on ground that was once part of a factory compound or filled during construction. Kolshet lies on Thane's northern edge, where Kolshet Road runs from the Ghodbunder side down towards the creek. Much of the land along it was industrial through the later twentieth century; as those units closed or moved away, their plots were redeveloped as some of the largest residential layouts in the city. The result is a neighbourhood of towers and new internal roads beside an older village and a few surviving industrial compounds. Its creek edge is lined with mangroves, mudflats and tidal channels, with Bhiwandi across the water, and parts of that edge have been opened to the public as waterfront.
