Along Balkum's road frontage, a narrow band of dense native forest between the traffic and the first tower does useful work: it catches dust on its leaves, softens the noise a little, and gives the ground floor something green to face. The soil here is often compacted fill over a high water table, so beds are raised and drained, and species chosen that tolerate wet roots in the monsoon. We plant with the first rains and water through the first dry seasons.
Balkum sits between Majiwada and Kolshet, along the road that leaves Thane for Bhiwandi. It began as a village towards the creek, and its old core of low houses and narrow lanes is still there. Around it, older industrial and storage plots have been giving way to residential towers, and the pace has picked up as Balkum has become part of the wider Ghodbunder Road housing market. Heavy trucks bound for the Bhiwandi warehouses pass along its edge. Towards the creek the ground is low, and mangroves hold the tidal margin.
