A Balkum site shares its access with freight traffic, and the construction plan has to start from that. Concrete, steel and debris trucks join a road already carrying heavy vehicles to Bhiwandi, so movements are timed away from the busiest hours and mud is washed off at the gate. The low ground needs site drainage that passes through silt traps before it leaves, since the nearest outfall is the creek. Village houses close to the boundary need screening, sprinkling and notice of noisy work.
Balkum sits between Majiwada and Kolshet, along the road that leaves Thane for Bhiwandi. It began as a village towards the creek, and its old core of low houses and narrow lanes is still there. Around it, older industrial and storage plots have been giving way to residential towers, and the pace has picked up as Balkum has become part of the wider Ghodbunder Road housing market. Heavy trucks bound for the Bhiwandi warehouses pass along its edge. Towards the creek the ground is low, and mangroves hold the tidal margin.

Environment Management & Mitigation Plan in Balkum: common questions.
01Neighbours in the old village say our site is flooding their lane. What should the EMP change?
Look first at where the site now sends its water. Raised ground, compacted haul roads and a blocked nala can all push runoff into lower lanes. The EMP should add temporary drains, a silt trap and a clear route to the storm drain, checked after each heavy rain. We survey the levels and fix the route with the site team.
02How long does environment management & mitigation plan take in Balkum?
On timing: prepared at EIA; implemented for project life. A realistic Balkum schedule is set once the site and the scope have been read, and the work is carried through to the outcome by the same named people.
