Ulhasnagar 1 is the camp at the Shahad end of the city, closest to Kalyan and to the Ulhas. Like the other camps it began as rows of barracks for families arriving after Partition, and those rows were rebuilt, extended and built upon until they became narrow streets of three- and four-storey buildings. Shops and small workshops occupy the ground floors, and homes fill the floors above. Markets draw buyers from Kalyan, Ambernath and the villages beyond. Open land barely exists, and many of the older buildings are now due for redevelopment.
Camp 1 faces the problems of a dense, ageing neighbourhood. Old buildings in poor repair are waiting to be rebuilt, and each new building will house more families on its plot and send more water into drains and sewers. Small workshops sit directly under homes. Waste from markets and households has little room to be sorted or stored. And the few trees and patches of open ground left are the first thing a new building may claim.

Several months is typical for a building project appraised at state level, longer if the committee raises queries. Most delays come from incomplete data or plans that change during appraisal. 03Can we plant our compensatory trees in pots on the terrace?
Tree Authorities generally expect trees planted in the ground, where they can grow to full size. Terrace planting may help with green cover but rarely counts as compensation. When the plot cannot take them, we propose locations such as school grounds or public spaces, with the landowner's consent and someone to look after them.
04Does a redeveloped building in Ulhasnagar need its own STP?
That depends on how big the building is and what its approvals say. Larger projects, and those holding a clearance, usually have to run their own treatment. Smaller ones may connect to the municipal line. We check each approval and list what is required before the design is final.
