Belavali lies in Badlapur West, on lower ground towards the Ulhas as the river passes the town. It grew from a village into a residential area of mid-rise buildings, and new layouts continue to rise on fields that were cultivated within living memory. The river is close, and in heavy monsoons its water has reached streets and ground floors, most memorably in the floods of July 2019. Old trees still line village roads and field boundaries. For many families here, the riverbank is the nearest open ground, used for walks and, too often, for dumping.
Belavali's questions come from living beside a river that floods. New buildings have to stand clear of flood water without pushing it onto the plots next door, and raising one site changes how water moves across the rest. Sewage and runoff from growing housing drain towards a river that others drink from downstream. The riverbank itself is squeezed by construction and dumping. And the green and open space the area needs has to survive being under water for a few days.

Straight answers
Belavali: common questions.
01Our site flooded in 2019. Can we still build?
Possibly, depending on where the flood line falls, what the development rules allow and the setbacks that apply. Plinth levels, drainage and access during high water all need planning. We assess the flood history and the regulations before the layout is finalised, and say frankly which parts of the site are best left open.
02Our site is by the river. What needs doing before the rains?
Move materials and equipment off low ground, secure stockpiles, clear drains, put silt barriers in place and plan how people and vehicles will reach the site if it floods. We provide a pre-monsoon checklist tailored to the site and walk it with your team in May, so gaps are found while there is still time to close them.
03Which trees suit riverbank planting?
Species that tolerate occasional flooding and bind soil well (arjun, jamun and karanj are common choices) do well along rivers in this region. The bank's slope, soil and how long water stands on it all matter. We choose species to suit each stretch and plan care until the trees are established.
04Our STP stopped working after last year's flood. How do we prevent this?
Raise the electrical panels and blowers above the highest recorded water level, seal openings where you can, and keep a restart routine ready: cleaning, checking motors, reseeding the biology. We assess the plant, recommend the changes that protect it, and can supervise the restart after the next flood if one comes.
05Can our compost be used on public land nearby?
Often, with the municipal council's agreement. Riverbank and roadside planting benefit from good compost, and it gives the society a steady outlet for what it produces. We can help a society agree an arrangement with the council or with groups already planting along the river.
