The refuse dumped near Uttan shows what happens when a city's waste is not separated and processed where it is made. For resorts, institutions and villages here, we set up segregation, on-site composting of wet waste where space allows, and collection of dry waste for recycling, so that less goes to the dump. For the corporation, we can assess the dumping ground itself and set out options for processing fresh waste and treating the old.
Uttan lies at the western end of the city, a coastal area of fishing villages, low hills and beaches facing the Arabian Sea, reached by the road out of Bhayandar. Its Koli and East Indian communities have lived here for generations by fishing and farming, and the villages keep their churches, wadis and small landing points for boats. There are resorts, retreat centres and weekend homes, and to the south the area runs on towards Gorai. It is also where the corporation's refuse has long been dumped, a use that has drawn repeated protest from the villages nearby.
