Irrigation system maintenance: the reason a working system still fails to water the plants.

An irrigation system almost never fails all at once: it fails emitter by emitter, and the plants in those zones die while the system reports that it ran.

What it is

Irrigation maintenance keeps a system delivering what it was designed to deliver. Drip emitters clog, filters load up, lines silt, nozzles break or get knocked out of arc, valves stick, pressure drifts and controllers keep running a schedule set for a season that has passed. Each of these is invisible from the controller, which reports only that the zone was energised, not that water reached anything.

KIPL maintains on inspection rather than on assumption: zone-by-zone checks of emitters and nozzles, filter cleaning and line flushing, pressure testing, leak detection, and seasonal rescheduling so the system is not irrigating at monsoon volumes in February. Where it is worth doing we run a uniformity check, catch cups across a zone, which is the only way to find out whether the far end of a run is getting a fraction of what the near end gets.

Straight answers

Irrigation System Maintenance: common questions.

01Why do drip emitters clog?

Suspended solids, biological growth and mineral precipitation inside the line, especially where water is hard or filtration has been neglected. Clogging is gradual and uneven, so a zone can lose a significant share of its emitters before anything looks wrong from the controller.

02What is distribution uniformity?

How evenly a zone applies water across its area. Poor uniformity means the zone must be run long enough to satisfy its driest point, which overwaters everything else, wasting water and drowning roots at the near end while the far end is still short.

03Why reschedule the controller seasonally?

Because plant water demand changes several-fold across the year. A schedule set in summer and left alone irrigates through the monsoon, which wastes water, leaches nutrients and causes root disease; one set in monsoon and left alone starves the planting in summer.

04How is a leak found on a buried system?

Usually by pressure behaviour and zone-by-zone isolation, supported by the obvious surface signs: persistent wet patches, unexplained consumption, pressure that will not hold. Isolating by zone narrows it quickly without excavating the whole run.

05Is maintenance needed on a new system?

Yes, from the first season. Commissioning debris in the lines, nozzles knocked during landscaping works, and a schedule set for establishment rather than maturity all need attention well before anything has worn out.
